2017+ Vauxhall Insignia - reviews?

The Sports Tourer with the right wheels is a very handsome car.

It actually got a lot of good reviews primarily because people expected it to be completely average and it turned out to be much better than they thought.

A step up is of course a Passat but you will pay more - a TDI Passat Estate in GT trim is the one to go for if you can

Panormaic sunfoof and digital dials -VERY expensive options at the time

Thanks for all the feedback everyone.

I think ultimately she needs to take each one she likes out for a drive and see what suits her. We're not going to agree on cars as we look for different things.

Currently, the list ranges from a Jag XF, through skoda's, a newer A4, a Q5 ... and the list goes on.

We're narrowing down the no cars, nothing peugeot, no Alfa's, no range/land rovers.

Just getting my MK5 Gti on the road asap so at least we've got a car, working from home means it was just sorn'd

She wants something as new as possible for £10k and she's looking at a Jaguar XF and Q5? Clearly then she isn't after something as new possible - surely a Q5 is going to be at least a decade old at this money.

Had the latest Insignia last year as a rental for a good few days, it's a big car, but more importantly rode well - certainly better than my current C Class.

It'll be a shame when these Mondeo/Insignias go and are replaced by compact hatchbacks that are now "SUVs" on 20" rims.

Yeah doesn't stack up at all. You are correct, the newest Petrol Q5 under £10k on AT is from 2011. I still think an Octavia ticks all the boxes in the OP although "decent-ish looking" can be subjective especially where women are concerned. If

Except op stated the usage is 5 mile journeys 4 times a day and a modern diesel will be a ticking time bomb for DPF issues. Nice enough car, but not in this scenario.

My mum has had a couple of TDI Passats used for that kind of stuff for years no DPF issues. (My parents have had a ton of different TDI VWs over the years in various uses the more common issues have been turbo around 70K needing some attention - worst they've had DPF wise so far has been a switch/sensor start playing up).

I have to say personally I've not really seen those kind of DPF issues in anything newer than about 2012/13 or so - in my experience much more common to have EGR related problems than anything though I know some engines/models are more susceptible to it than others.

Ironically I had my EGR pipe off today to fit a revised gasket. With EGR’s it varies a lot, my old RAV had a very light coating of dry soot the first time it was stripped (95K ish), same with the current generation at about 85, both were run largely on main brand fuel and then Costco premium. The Altea we had was horrific at 160K. Most manufacturers publish guidance on minimum cycles for each engine, 5 miles on a VW diesel won’t get it up to temp on a cool autumn day, let alone get it to a point it can do a regen. I know the BMW sourced diesels Toyota use were subject to a recall due to the cooling block cracking which obviously causes its own issues. Most DPF issues aren’t actually DPF issues, it blocking is just a symptom of another issue further up the chain, but rather than find the cause, people often treat the symptom.

Yeah - most of the issues with our work vehicles has been EGR and so on related that result in the engine running badly/producing a lot of gunk - keep that in check and you don't tend to end up with DPF issues anything like as much.

I hate to think what the DPF is like on my pickup - 3L V6 diesel - since the pandemic the miles has reduced a lot and mostly just gets shorter runs on country lanes - rarely more than a 30 minute run tops. (I'm pretty much resigned to having to replace it sooner if not later).

Thanks for the feedback all.

We've been out a bit looking at different cars, sitting in them etc. She's narrowed it down to:

Skoda Octavia VRS
Skoda Supurb (but she's not sure on it, thinks it's a granddad car)
Audi Q5
Think there's a couple of others such as the BMW X5.

I've suggested maybe getting another mk5 golf gti like mine but 5 door. I must say, I've seen a few VW Arteons and I'm really liking them but can't justify the money on something to drive the roads she does. All terrible single lane back roads, pot holes and traffic.

Next is to find some local, take them out and put the kids/seats in them and see how they drive/feel. So far it's all been looks, age, size.

I'm glad you have decided against the Vauxhall.

From your posts you don't seem to be the type that has the pre-requsites for Vauxhall ownership:

Corner-sofa
Gucci belt
Life-Love-Laugh vinyl stickers somewhere in the house
An urge to sleep with your sibling (if you haven't already) or underage girls if you're looking at a Corsa...

Out of your new choices I'd go with either of the Skodas. The Q5/X5 could feel a bit 'boaty' around country lanes.

tbh, Vauxhalls owners always make me think of Onslow from Keeping Up Appearances, but for the price vs age/miles it had to be a consideration. She even looked at Mondeo's but couldn't bring herself to own one either, although the Kuga was on the list, but has to be a newer one as it looks nicer.

This has been the most painful experience in years, never knew picking a car could be so hard. Just found a 2008/9 mk5 gti, stage 2, nearly 300bhp, 5 doors, same spec as mine that she loves driving and she just went "too old, would be a nice 40th present for you though if you sold yours!" It's driving me mental :D

I actually prefer the Superb just for that little extra space/comfort at the expense of a little power but I think she's leaning more to the VRS and Q5... she loves the Audi image, more upmarket... sigh.
