Fuel read out, fault?

Yep a crappy policy. Warranties cover most things but the person on the phone just wanted to make me aware if an issue if found and that isn't covered, then I have to pay the fee so it's a bit of a silly gamble then.

Also what if they don't find anything.

I cancelled the appointment as Its not exactly urgent and something came up, but just starting to think it's the way it is and not worth spending money investigating what sounds like a bit of a quirk?

All my car's before were more accurate than this for sure
 
Not that I agree with it but the fee will be for if they find nothing wrong. If they find something and fix it I imagine the fee will be rolled into the cost of the repair? I think you've done right telling them to stuff it. From how you've described it it's just a quirk, as in it's French (like with my own) and you'll soon develop a feeling for it.

Yeah I think my initial reaction was.. this seems odd, should get it checked while under warranty as wouldn't want it to be considered a fault if I sell the car at some point etc .

I agree, if they don't find anything I've essentially wasted their time which will understandably cost.

It's just odd that it's the physical needle that instantly drops to. So plodding along, readout suggests "x" amount of miles left, physical fuel gauge is about a quarter maybe a fifth full then beep sound, low fuel, needle drops to zero, and readout suggests 10miles left or "--" which to me suggests bugger all left
 
Yeah but it's a cost caused because of their own cars rubbish fuel level reading. A main dealer shouldn't be charging to check if everything is ok. If they're happy to offer a free vehicle health check every time it goes in (which I assume is a Renault thing and not down to the dealership) they can bundle in checking your weird fuel gauge! I guess the issue is problem customers who almost invent problems.

If it was an Independent? Then yeah I'd agree with them charging for the time. I bet all they do is plug an error reader in anyway.

I’m sure there’s an owners club online, perhaps register on there and ask people with the same car. If, with their help, you deem it not normal, then surely Renault must be able to replicate or find the issue and resolve it.

That's the issue. Many seem to suggest that it is working correctly and it's just something I should get used to. Which if so that's fine but doesn't seem right to me based on how all other vehicles work. Getting low, warning. Not getting lowish, suddenly none left and last minute warning ;)

Probably just a weird electrical fault. I'll see what others say


Yeah I intend to try and find over owners see how there's acts. I tried on a generic RS forum but may try another

It's more a case of, "Well they're all like that and even if we replace it it'll do the exact same thing again" I think. It's not worth the hassle considering how easy it is to live with it.

Next time it goes in for a service it might be worth asking them to check it whilst it's there and see how receptive they are to doing it without charging you for the diagnostic. It does sound like it behaves worse than mine (though I don't really let it get that low to test it out). It's an RS, not a bog standard one and I'd expect them to treat it a little more appropriately.

In terms of forums it'll be worth looking at German, French and Polish ones, they have bigger communities than in the UK and google translate is a boon if you need it.

It's the manufacturer warranty

I had similar when I had my old Megane R26. The fuel gauge isn't controlled by the sender in the tank, it drops based on how the ECU calculates your current fuel use. My current Trafic works van is the same. Plenty of times I have arrived at a job with more than enough range showing to get me home, only for me to return to the van and the range drop by 30-50 miles.

When I bought the R26 it had larger injections fitted and was remapped to suit. Unfortunately K-Tec, who had mapped it, did not alter the trip computer scaling for the new injectors. As a result it was basing my fuel usage on it still having the smaller stock injectors fitted. This resulted in in thinking I was achieving 40+mpg and I ran out of petrol with over 100 miles range being displayed, and about 1/4 of a tank of fuel on the gauge. Fortunately it forced my hand into going to EFI in Runcorn and getting the map checked and massively improved, along with the correct scaling applied, and the fuel gauge then worked more accurately
