How much WILL you pay for a graphics card?

I paid £420 for the 1070 Ti I'm using now, back when they were newly released. That's about as much as I'll pay for a graphics card. When I can get a very quiet (silent outside of gaming) graphics card that's substantially more powerful for about that price, I probably will. Until then, no. If push comes to shove, I'll give serious consideration to moving to console. Consoles are adequate for gaming and when a console costs less than a midrange graphics card by itself it's hard to convince myself that the extra performance is worth the cost. The big obstacle to me is input devices, since controllers are very hard on thumbs and I'm too old for that. But my next PC upgrade would almost certainly be pretty much a new PC, which is about 3x the cost of a new console. Is it better by enough to warrant that much extra cost? I'm not sure.

The Series X is an overall superior experience to the 6800 / Ryzen 3600 system I was running previously. I would need to upgrade my motherboard, cpu and GPU to exceed the series x in most (but not all) performance aspects.

Does the image quality of the xbox match up to PC then? (genuine question having never seen one in action). I was under the impression you had to sacrifice quite a lot of settings to maintain the 4k/60fps

Recently paid £1400 (MSRP) for a 3090FE. Wanted a 3080ti at MSRP but they were being snapped up too fast so went for the 3090 instead. I'm actually glad I ended up with that though because apparently they run quieter than the 3080ti's and I do like a quiet system.

Sadly I would have probably paid more if GPU's had started become more sparce and I was getting desperate as my 7700k/1080ti build was starting to struggle with newer games.

I still really want an EVGA Hybrid 3090 to get those DB's down even more but currently beggers can't be choosers and last time I looked used ones were £2300+ and that's if you could find one anywhere. Gone are the days when you can open up a web page and just pick and choose the GPU you want :(

I am running a 1440p / 240hz monitor so can only experience 1440p / 120hz on Xbox but I would say the image quality is excellent on Xbox. I think all of the games I have played so far in Xbox have either played at 60hz or if they haven't I couldn't tell because of VRR. I have never once thought to myself "I bet this would look better on PC."

Then you have game load times which are faster on Xbox than PC, the ability to swap between games in less than 10 seconds, a better and bigger selection of gamepass games than PC, games just work without having to find optimal settings in the options menu, an included low latency controller in the box and a near silent machine in an attractive small form factor design.

For me the only advantage PC offers is higher FPS. 60hz is enough for me though and I am considering selling my Alienware 240hz monitor I got 6 months ago and getting a good 4K 60hz instead to make the move to Xbox permanent.

I couldn't go back to a console controller again after spending years honing my mouse and keyboard muscle memory. And not sure I could game at anything other than 21:9 Ultrawide now either

When consoles adopt keyboard/mouse support in every shooter I'll abandon PC Gaming. That's not because of current pricing, I've wanted it since the original XBox 19 years ago

Until that happens, I'll continue buying more expensive graphics cards. Max budget now is £300.

It depends on my needs at the time. If there are some must play games that need the performance of an expensive card then I may buy. That said I look at a graphics card and see if it is worth the asking price relative to other cards. Like look at a 3080, the price difference from a 3070 is similar to the extra performance you get in percentage terms. But this is not so with a 3090, so you probably would not see me with a card like that.

I likely won’t pay more than MSRP. That’s why both my last two cards have been FE ones as at least I am not paying a middleman £200-£300 extra. This is one of the reasons I will likely only buy an idea FE cards going forward as they are value for money relative to other cards. Also less likely to make a loss when selling on later.

AMD should take note as their cards seem well expensive. They need to start selling direct to consumers also in larger quantities like Nvidia. Right now people are asking silly money for a used 6700 XT on members. I think it was AMD’s very own LtMatt who listed one for £675 stating no offers please. Yeah, won’t be getting any offers from me when I can grab a brand new RTX 3070 for £200 less!:p:D

For a work PC, if my work relied on it, I'd buy a 3090 FE since they hang around a bit in the drops.
For me I'd just wait and pounce on an amazing deal because I have always done that and it's just part of me to try my hardest not to get ripped off.

Fair enough - they've definitely come on significantly since I was in the console game then!

Still don't think personally I'd ever swap exclusively away from PC, but I can see how it would be more appealing to someone not already "in the game".

I have been a 21:9 user for years, I can't go back to 16:9 now... looks too small.

I was thinking the same when I had my 34" Ultrawide for gaming & it was awesome but not so for streaming, I moved to a 32" 1440p monitor & it's great for both, I might not have been thinking that if I'd gone back to a 27" model though.

I bought my son an xbox x for Christmas and he has hardly used it, so I moved it down stairs in to the living room as I found Madden 21 on gamepass and thought I would give it a go. I have to say I am impressed and the graphics look great in 4k

I also played Halo in death match and lost big time to a 9 year old, I just can't use controllers for FPS games. But for me consoles are no good for flightsims and I like to fly in VR

Is there no way to game at 21:9 but stream the output as 16:9?

Definitely, and that extra screen at the edges really helps you see enemies in shooter games. It's really handy for flying planes in Battlefield as well because when you are behind an enemy plane you can see which direction he pulls off in. It's like having the benefit of a wide FOV without actually having to have a really unrealistic looking FOV.

I had a 42" 1080p screen for years before my 34" Ultrawide, I can't imagine gaming on 27" 16:9. I actually still use the 42" for sim racing because even the 34" Ultrawide is too small for that.

You can't be sitting at a normal distance from the screen then. I use an ikea desk which I would say is normal sized for an office type gaming desk. It's not very deep and my 32" is at the limit of what is actually usable. I actually struggled to convert from a 27" which was a surprise as the 27" felt a bit small but the 32" is really a bit too big. I'm using normal widescreen monitors though not ultrawide which has no purpose in the FPS twitch shooter world.

It would be impossible for a 42" to be usable at all. It would make me play worse. Pro gamers use 24" and 27" screens at LAN's for instance where money is no object. Your setup isn't a normal case usage or scenario. I will never go bigger than 32" and I'll never use ultra wide. Neither will work for me.
