Maybe 24mph. Spotted the mobile unit as I rounded a corner and hit the brakes as soon as I saw it, but he did have line of sight of me going over for a short period.

My fault, but hmph :(

Does the common 10% +2 rule apply in 20mph zones? And was is 24MPH on your speedo? I wouldn't be surprised if you didn't hear anything.

Some places seem to be nazis with 20mph zones. It's such a small margin they just send out fines to anyone even slightly over :/

It's an easy money spinner as hardly anyone actually goes 20 in a 20 zone.

Must be a great way to raise revenue, sorry I mean improve safety. Even the slowest drivers I've sat with generally do 25 in 20 zones.

Why bother? Chances are that you’ll catch up the driver who’s speeding in front of you at the next junction or red light. Have some self restraint, such that you don’t have to worry about fines and can laugh at those who do.

But having to stick to such a low limit is a big distraction. 20mph in some cars is barely resting on the accelerator in 2nd gear. You have to watch the speedo instead of the road.

What if a child ran out in to the road op? 20 zones are 20 for a reason.

Exactly this. I used to live surrounded by 20mph zones and whilst it is very annoying to lug along in second gear at first, you soon get used to it. Oh, and it reduced the number of car<>pedestrian collisions resulting in a serious injury by 40%.

There's a main distributor road in my town that (understandably) has a 20mph zone outside a side road leading to a school. I'd say the majority of cars going up there trigger the "20 SLOW DOWN" sign. Even my goody twoshoes wife will do 32 through there sometimes. To be honest, outside of school days/hours, it feels awkward doing 20 and you'll have someone right up your backside pulling out to overtake in the oncoming lane at anything under high 20s.

I only got around to getting my license a couple of years back. During my lessons (in a clearly marked learner car), I lost count of the amount of times I was sat doing 20 in a 20 and other cars would get right up my bumper to try and intimidate me and/or just scream past on the wrong side of the road.

Granted, they almost always fit the stereotype of being a white van or a black BMW/Audi.

I get the frustration, but still... You're not going anywhere quickly in central London.

The parents shouldn't be letting them run around in the road in the first place. I never did that as a kid.

I did. I got run over 3 times, but it was character building.

I never got hit at 30... Worst was being hit side on by a Transit on my bike. Lucky there was enough room to lie under it and crawl out. Good job I'd relentlessly studied Raiders of the Lost Ark. Bike was a write off though. Bent frame and wheels.

Pretty much anything I drive you have to be constantly watching the speedo to stick to a 20 :( my truck will get up to 30 responsively with like 2mm of accelerator travel (not an exaggeration) and even idle revs (automatic) will creep forward at about 10 - so it is no fun trying to stick to a 20.

If you have trouble driving at 20mph you clearly are incompetent at driving and should stop.

Agreed.

Good car? Good brakes? Fast reactions? Concentrating on the road?

I'd rather step in front of that driver doing 30 in a 20, than some numb nuts retard staring at their speedo, and not really paying attention because their mate is giving them love island updates on WhatsApp.

But it all boils down to revenue and easy of prosecution.

Don't get me wrong, driving at unsafe speeds in build up areas is dangerous and I generally (honestly) tend to stick to 30's pretty solidly.

But being fined for doing 24 in a 20 if that is the case of the OP is pathetic.

If you're unable to actually keep to a speed limit, you sure that you're safe to drive on the road?

Expanding on the above. If you can't manage to maintain a constant speed unless you stop looking around you, then you have no spacial awareness and are a danger to other road users. If you're saying that you can't keep to the speed limit if you look around, then by default, you'd almost certainly fail any driving test, and really aren't fit to be driving.
Yes?

I'd suggest that's you more than anything else, if it's so difficult buy a car with an auto limiter.
Also can't think of a single car that's not happy at 20mph in 3rd gear, even my old Rx8 would be fine.
