23mph in 20 zone :(

Those reaction times are very much the lowest common denominator.

1.5-2.5 sec is a really slow reaction time, especially when startled. Thats a 1500ms ping time :p

You never know how quickly you are going to react - I've had times I've surprised myself how quickly I've reacted other times, especially when something is unexpected, I've frozen for a second before my brain comes up with a way of processing what I'm seeing and sometimes you are aware of other factors which stop you just instinctively reacting and braking.

It is one of the reasons it is a good idea to drive defensively and leave a reasonable margin for error as you never know when someone else might freeze up in the moment and not make the decision logic dictates they would, etc.

Exactly. Many times it takes me a second to process: "Hang, they are doing WHAT stupid thing??" The sheer dumbness of the manoeuvre dulls my reactions. If the thing that happens is reasonable, instinct is fine, but sometimes instinct is overwhelmed. If a horse jumped in front of you, you'd brake sharpish; but if a rhino jumped out you'd hesitate while your brain processed.

Exactly. As that study showed when there was a red light fitter to the dash and people were told it was going to go off any minute, like the clipboard tap on the dash during the driving test, people werent bad and did on average get close to the HC reaction times.

Once they did it at random so it could be any day you were driving your car, they found peoples reaction times increased substantially and many were an extra second longer.

Then throw in people tired on early mornings or distraction by their infotainment or passenger and you can see the HC is miles away from "worse case" scenario
