I got a cheap IR blaster (tuya smart life) to try and control my avr and TV.
It works.. But..

The TV for some reason needs (and has always needed) a long press on the remote to turn on.
I can't seem to simulate that.

All other functions work fine. Off, change channel, menu, volume etc etc.

Anyone come across this? It's probably niche!

Our toshiba tv does that with the native remote. We found using the up or down arrow wakes it up quicker with a standard press. I can only surmise it's some kind of thing to try to limit accidental power on/off if the remote slips off to the floor/gets sat on by mistake etc.

Yeah I tried that too. No luck! Really annoying! It's a deal breaker!

is there a menu setting hidden away?
by up/down I mean the navigation cursor, not the programme up/down, though tbh I think that also works on ours. But then it is the native remote I suppose which helps.

Can you not set the TV to turn on when say you turn on the avr?
My TV comes on when I press the sky TV home button.

The IR blast doesn't turn it on. My old remote, you had to hold down the power button for 1-2 secs. But with this there is no option for that.

Absolutely nothing seems to work. I'm guessing this is an issue with my TV just not being compatible with universal remotes.

I have a GT50 and no surprise it is the same. It is also the same if when controlled via the Sky Q remote.

It might be to make it easier to use to multi-device controls, as the Panasonic control can be used for their dvd/blu ray players too.

The TV wakes up on any input signal from the AV channel from the Sky Q box or the PS4, so the wake up with AVR input suggestion is probably your best bet if that support HDMI control.

I had a problem where I wanted to tell Siri to turn the volume down but Siri only did it in increments of 1 so I made a shortcut and had Siri run the shortcut 10 times whenever I say "hey Siri turn down the television."
Perhaps this would work for you; get it to send the same signal very quickly over and over and perhaps the tv will assume that it's being turned on or off. Lmk if you need help.

If it doesn't work with Siri Shortcuts then a home bridge might work.
I'm using a broadlink one.

Hmm. How do you get it to wake from the avr?

This is what I was trying to do. No idea how to get it to work!

Have you got HDMI control enabled in the settings on the TV (I can't remember if is a global setting or per HDMI socket/device like image settings) and does the AVR support it? Generally if it has ARC it should support something like that too.

With that enabled it should be automatic, although it can be temperamental if channels are switched before devices go to sleep etc.

Seems like the TV can talk to the avr but the avr can't talk to the TV.

Oh, that is a pain, maybe the avr isn't fully compatible with whatever signal Panasonic implemented for control, as nothing in the earlier versions ever seemed to be fully standard? Or it just doesn't support the wakeup control signals full stop.

Sorry I can't offer any more advice that, I haven't had much experience of any other TV equipment in the better part of a decade apart from trouble shooting family stuff and drooling over things I can't afford.

Edit: What avr is it?

I actually managed to finally get this working.
Went through a lot Of settings a lot of hassle.

I think it was the TV that's an issue.

I had to
Enable vierra link on TV (not called hdmi control. Or CEC)
I had to enable hdmi control on amp.

It didn't stop there. Turning on the amp (set to chromecast) didn't turn the TV on.
Something has to stream (say netflix) for. It to activate.

Still not the end.
For some reason this kicked the TV into DVB (freeview) mode. This is bizarre default behaviour, a hdmi source has turned you on.. Default to freeview. I have no idea why. I even set the default to 'hdmi 1'.

I tried different hdmi ports. No luck.
I tried setting default hdmi on TV. No luck.
What may have been the issue (I'm not sure, I was flicking so many settings) is changing a setting on a button called 'vierra link' from TV to 'home cinema'.
There was no explanation of what this even was.

Main issue is the tvs menu system is ****. Poor explanations. Menus hidden in weird places. To get default hdmi I had to enable 'hotel mode' by holding - channel and pressing AV 3 times... Wtf.

Anyway after much pain, I now just have to 'turn on the amp' to my home assistant.
After this saying 'play X on living room TV' kicks the rest off.

Thank you all for your help. This is one I wouldn't have figured out. Never knew amp could control the TV like that.

Got to properly try it tonight as having issues for sound from TV speakers rather than the 5.1.

Glad you got it sorted, it has been so long since I properly messed about with the settings, I dread the day I ever to deal with another TV :p.

I didn't have a chance to check the menus as I was replying, as I only check the forums when I am sat down for ten minutes with a cuppa (or in the throne room :D) and rarely when I have I access to the telly. That is usually when the family are asleep or otherwise occupied.

For anyone else with a similar issue, vast majority of TVs turn on when you hit a number button. I think it might even be written into the D-Book (UK requirements for TV design).
