What the hell is this warning light?

check to see if it has an odb port, you may be able to download the error code to zero in on the actual fault, a bluetooth obd reader is like 10quid on amazon and is good for reading and clearing errors on your phone (torque for android as an example)

+1 for doing this, at least you'll know what error is being reported.

I'd also stick in a bottle of redex too.
 
Not one reference site to warning lights had this image, I think it took me about 2 hours to narrow it down and that I had almost given up, as like you say it normally doesn't take long. But I am a patient man and don't like to be beat lol.
