Aftermarket wheels - Anyone still buy them?

Maybe age of the car and owner has something to do with it. Both my JDM cars have Speedline Corsa fitted. The Impreza because the set came up cheap 2nd hand and wanted to preserve the OE wheels. The Evo came with these red Bola monstrosities which had to come off pronto. Decent OE wheels are just silly money in the UK.

I have an F31 BM and the wheels have started to look corroded around the centre cap. Will probably just get them refurbished rather than an aftermarket set.

Little bit big for my needs :p Stock wheels are 15", the Volks are 16" (I'd stick with 15s if they made them) and about 2kg lighter each than stock.
Some of those are £8.6K per set  Lets face it you will never ever get back a fraction of what forged alloys cost! For most people cast alloys are good enough & strong enough!!

Horses for courses, I’m not sure the point you are trying to make? Most people are happy enough buying their computers out of PC World, this entire forum exists because for some people, that isn’t good enough.

You don’t want forged alloys, fine. However for some of us they offer benefits and we have the budget, so…

Good luck pal if you are happy to blow so much for so little gain your money your choices! ONLY point I was trying to make is for most road users forged alloys are of little benefit but some people love their badges of honour good luck to them ;) but with age comes great wisdom & better money management not sure forged alloys are anything more than bragging rights tbh :p If you can show me scientific data that clearly indicates a 2-3% weight difference vs cast alloys is worth 10+ times the cost I would be interested to see that :p

Where do you stop though after forged alloys...forged pistons, lightened con rods, cylinder head reflow, blue printed engine, hybrid turbo, stage 3 tune etc etc you can go on forever but usually just sell what you have buy something from the next league above what you currently own as you at least get some of the money back when you decide to sell. Most mods will not give you any resale value so its dead money once you decide to part with the vehicle!

No-one has suggested forged wheels are for the majority of normal road users

I want a set because they offer me benefits over cast wheels. I don’t need to prove those benefits to anyone though  And it’s certainly nothing to do with ‘bragging rights’ as you put it. Non-one but the eagle eyed would know if I have forged wheels or not. Such wheels don’t give you instant hero status

Ok, so you don’t feel such wheels are worth the extra cost, that’s fine by me. I’m not going to try to make you see things any differently, I certainly wouldn’t suggest popping a set on your Renault.

Btw my wisdom and money management is working out just fine thanks ;)

I imagine forged wheels are a "lot more special" and hold their value too. As the old boot analogy goes*... buy cheap buy often. Buy proper once and sell it later on. A bit of an OTT example but I imagine these 10x forged wheels will depreciate far slower.

I found forged wheels depreciate just as fast as cast on the used market. Brand dictates value retention more imo.

The irony of posting this on a forum where people spend crazy money on PCs and tech etc

I bought a set of CSL reps from CM wheels a few years ago because my E92 BMW has the infamous Mv225 wheels, which are about as strong as melted chocolate so I figured they can't be any worse. In over 3 years only 1 wheel has a slight buckle. They were only 500quid for a set as well.

BBS LM's here, got them as they were crazy cheap, not because im a big fan of them. There very marmite for sure but i've still got the oems for when the time comes to punt them on. tbh i cant say i notice a massive difference to the weight difference vs the oem's.
