GigaByte Aorus 2080 Super Random Fan Issue

So I've had this card for a little over a year now without much in the way of problems but in the last couple of weeks I've noticed a really strange phenomenon occurring when playing certain "high demand" games - one fan will ramp up to 4000+ RPM for no more than a second or two and then return to normal. I managed to catch a readout on HWMonitor which shows the fan ramped up to 4210RPM with the highest the GPU temp went up to being 82C.

I had this happen again twice yesterday which has prompted me to make this post in the hope that someone here knows WTF is going on, if it is resolvable and whether or not this is an RMA issue.

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated!

A custom fan curve might fix it?

Did you update drivers recently? Otherwise it does sound like something you want to speak to support about, and maybe RMA the card. (not a great time to be without a GPU I know!)

Nope, haven't updated drivers recently so I'm certain it's nothing to do with that. After doing a little more research it seems that this is an issue with some amount of history to it on GigaByte cards and is probably going to have to be an RMA... honestly not impressed after the cash that was dropped on it, ah well **** happens eh! Thanks for taking the time to reply xPETEZx, was appreciated.

Good luck with the RMA. Hopefully they can sort you out a replacement asap.

It may just be a temperature issue from what I’ve been reading, with these current hot temps likely so.

Not sure if gigabyte allow for say strip down of the cooler and re-paste without voiding warranty, however you could always try undervolting the card see if it changes anything.

Should see identical performance with lesser temps which may stop the issue.

With my 2080Ti can literally cut the power usage in half for 7% performance loss at 4k.

I had the same issue with my Gigabyte 2080, as soon as the card hit 82/83 degrees, the fans would turn into jet engines. Gigabyte will not allow you to replace the thermal paste without voiding the warranty so I sent mine back and had them reapply thermal paste. This corrected the issue and the card runs cooler than ever.

Similar issue with both of my Gigabyte GeForce RTX 2080 Ti AORUS XTREME 11GB cards. Both returned to GBT Tech UK. Both cards needed a backpanel replacement!

So after dragging my heels a little on this (really didn't want to be without a card without sourcing some kind of temp measure in the meanwhile) I have just started the RMA process and I have to say I'm not a fan of the process so far. A cookie cutter automated response telling me I should go back to my retailer for a refund or replacement (if I could have done that I would!) failing that if you want a repair then I'm told that I have to pay for the shipping both to GigaByte and back from them or go through the hassle of organising a courier service... like WTF? Is this the usual deal with them? In all my experiences with other RMAs I have only ever had to pay to ship the item to the manufacturer for repair, never have I had to pay for them to ship it back to me. I've barely started the process and I'm seriously put off from ever buying a GigaByte product ever again.

Sorry for this being more of a rant than anything, but I'm really not impressed with this and it has soured my mood somewhat.

Don't be sorry, that's a terrible service right there and everyone goes on about well they are UK RMA all the time... I would rather buy a better item from another AIB than touch their goods. Nothing surprises me anymore with these companies and their behaviour to their paying customers, they just don't care more fish in the sea and more fish than they can supply clearly.

For those who like completions to their tales I offer you the following:

So the ordeal has come to an end, and despite a few initial hiccups it wasn't all bad, but it does still leaves me a with a couple of questions. In the end the turnaround for the whole process was just over a week. I sent it off Tuesday, they received it last Wednesday and I got a replacement back today (the following Thursday for those in the future!!!). Apparently my old card was beyond repair for some reason, this reason however is completely unknown to me and is the first of my two questions. I asked what the problem with the old card was that deemed it to be beyond repair but I got no joy in that endeavour. The second question is the reason for my initial "rant" as it were. Why oh why do I have to pay for shipping both there and back, I still find this part of their process really puzzling especially when the other companies I've had RMA experience with do not require this (EVGA and Corsair) and with one of them I had to ship an item to Europe for the RMA!

Ah well it's over with now I guess, touch wood the new card doesn't develop any issues :)
