How much WILL you pay for a graphics card?

Before the 30 series and msrp details were released last year, I'd budgeted about 1k for a top end GPU based on the ridiculous prices of the 2080Ti.

Coming from a1080 Ti, I managed to get lucky and bag a release day 3080 at msrp, which after 9 months of gaming I've just sold for profit that's been put towards an upgrade to a msrp 3090FE I bagged in the drop other day.

Can't grumble at having a 3090 in my rig, without it costing the earth! But I think I've been very lucky considering the gpu climate for the last 9 months.

How are you finding the 3090 FE from the 3080. I just got a 3090 for msrp from the recent drop. A bit wary given the outlay, but coming from a 1080ti like yourself.

Its a step upwards, and obviously the benchmarks have gone up. But it was driven by my desire to upgrade, more than anything else. And we all know its not a cost effective thing to do ;)

I suppose I was spoilt with my last card which was a day 1 msrp 3080TUF, which was quiet & fast, and of course a massive jump up from the 1080Ti.

Even though its early days, I'm super happy with the 3090FE. Its a stunning design in the flesh, I love how massive it is, the build quality and the speed it runs while keeping quiet is great. I'm not even sure I need to tweak anything yet! While gaming the junction temp has maxed at 96C (My 3080TUF got to 90C). But I've now added an extra case fan, so will keep an eye on it. I'm in no rush to open it up, but I may try an under volt in the future.

Even at msrp its a lot of money, but its worth it to me

If you've come from a 1080Ti, you're in for a right treat :D

So you scalped then?

So you think I bought a gpu on day of release back in September knowing it was going to massively increase in price (due global shortages/pandemic etc..) just to turn a profit at someone elses misfortune? Even though having just sold my 3080 it was worth far more 5 months ago!

What do you think?

You've read my posts above, you can see I've enjoyed the 3080 as a gamer for the last 11 months, and sold it on at a fair price in todays market, to fund an upgrade? Do you think that is the definition of scalping?

Yep I did the same but I sold mine at cost which to me is a great bonus. I wouldn't have sold it at a higher price at the current time, it would have left a nasty taste in my mouth.

It's not an excuse, and my transaction isn't the attitude that drives scalping, I feel perfectly comfortable with my transaction, and so does the person who has bought from me.

Scalping is when someone buys an item to specifically sell at a higher rate driven by the current market, and taking advantage of people.

My GPU was bought from ocuk, and this is what it would cost to replace it from here, in the current market.

I sold it for less than this, so the buyer is very happy with his purchase, and I won't lose any sleep over it.

You seem a bit salty about something

No one is forced to buy anything. Using a product for 11 months and then selling on even at a higher than purchase price is not scalping.

+1

People need to look at what makes someone a scalper.
When I sold my 6 month old 3060 Ti to help fund an upgrade to 3080 I didn't put a price on it, I just told the buyer to make me an offer and I accepted it without negotiation.

On the other hand, there are people who pounce on drops and, as soon as they receive order confirmation, list their incoming card on various 2nd hand selling pages/sites for nearly double the price they paid.

the issue with that is someone might buy it from you and flip it the next day for the going rates that you could have done.

Would this make @signal11th a scalper-enabler? :p

Two different levels though, there are many people who search for underpriced goods to flip on and scalpers as far as i understand it anyway, buy stock that is in very short supply already so that they can profit from people who were not able to purchase it

Having something appreciate in value after months of use and then wanting to sell it isnt really scalping. It's just good fortune.

If you don't like it, you should write a very stern letter to the antiques roadshow.

Which is what prompted my reply above.

Poor form that from him, the actual scalpers don't keep hold of a card for 11 minutes let alone 11 months. He owes you an apology in my opinion, that's not at all good calling someone out in that way when it's clearly not the case. Totally out of order. He'll either be decent and apologise or call me one of your "protectors". You got lucky Mick, you bought initially at the time having no idea how the entire graphics card thing would pan out, then saw what happened and basically saw the chance to upgrade even further without lashing out. Fair play to you I say.

Kudos to him if he does come along, admit his mistake and apologise. But I'm not holding my breath
