SO I bought a 5800x from the forum and fitted yesterday.

Desktop idle temps were around 40c which was fine.

Today desktop idle temps are 60c?

Any ideas? MY Ryzen power plans have also vanished.

Using a Noctua U12s cooler

I've reseated it and reapplied paste to no effect

If it persists, make sure power slider thingy is set to Balanced, and check minimum cpu state is set correctly in Power Plan options.
I dont have the slider but have set balanced?

Not a Windows update mucking about in the background, was it?
There was one there as im on an insider ring but run it and no dice.

Just realised the latest BIOS Ive installed is a beta so going back to an older one non-beta

Thats just it. Not a lot. I have the power plan on balanced but it doesnt seem to be dropping down, if I had to guess it seems to be staying in performance. Using power saver knocks 20c+ off desktop temps and in my mind balanced should be dynamically switching down and up?

All I can think of is to check the power plan's options, make sure minimum processor state is correct - usually 5% I think.
That's why I mentioned the slider- if this is set to performance, it doesn't matter what plan you're set to, it overrides it- but I'm at work so can't tell you where it is at the moment. Works lappy doesn't have it, but my home rig does...

Cheers guys. I’ll wait to hear your figures if I can to double check mine.

wondered if I need a fresh install of windows at this point…

@jigger crossed my mind. Using noctua paste which might need cure time

Cheers guys. I’ll wait to hear your figures if I can to double check mine.

Just checked mine and minimum processor state is 0%.

Guess this is why my idle temps are so low, ~ 27c at the moment.

Take it this is safe as i did not alter it myself and am not having any stability problems.

Am using the latest chipset drivers from AMD.

I’ll have a look cheers dude. I think between swapping CPU’s and a couple of chipset reinstalls it’s become confused perhaps

Have you made sure to install the latest chipset drivers from the amd site for your motherboard chipset ? That will also cause these issues if not installed. Also remember you will not have the ryzen power plans with zen3 5xxx cpus. Just use the balanced power plan in windows. Zen2 would show ryzen power plans and confused people that updated to zen3 thinking the power plan was missing, it is actually correct now to use just balanced for zen3 and no ryzen power plans show once installing the latest chipset drivers.

Edit: Also make sure to be using the latest motherboard bios too.

Interestingly when I quit out the system straight into the bios the temp is 32. No way have I gone from 67 in system to 32 in like 10 seconds?

SO either something is wrong or something is working it on the desktop?

Disabled everything. I’d read Rgb software could be a culprit so stopped all that. Cannot find a single thing for the moment. I think the one I picked up is just a hit chip.

So, seems the cpu is running as intended given my noctua is classed as ‘entry level’ cooling which is fine.

I now have a decision, accept it’s a hot chip and the fan noise that comes with it. Or switch to a 5600x.

decisions decisions
