Hello thanks for looking.

When i run speed test on my phone im getting 600mbps on 5g but when i connect my phone to my pc via usb c im only getting 160mbps when i run speed test on my pc!

According to the internet usb type c is capable of 20gbps? but this is obviously not the case in my situation.

I've looked up my mb which is a asus rog strix b450f and the usb c is in fact usb 3.1 gen 2.

Or would it be the phone (Samsung Galaxy s21) ?

If i use WiFi hotspot its 40mbps max.

I've spoken to my sp Three uk and they say connection sharing is part of my contract so they wouldn't be responsible for any kind of throttling.

Its kind of annoying because the internet is the main reason i took out this contract! We don't have cable in my area and 30mbps is the best BT have to offer Which is useful to no one.

I thought about getting a 5g router but the cheapest one I can find is over £400.

It may be the phone - the networking/tethering interface probably uses a lot of CPU assistance rather than a full hardware implementation and the phone CPU simply isn't up to it.

I see. So it's most likely the phone. Damn.

Odds are the phone runs the USB interface at USB 2.0 speeds. That something has a USB-C cable is not an indication of a USB 3.x interface.

There's no sensible reason why it'd need USB 3 20 gbps. Added complexity and the power consumption would be off the scale, which for a battery driven device is sub optimal.

You are probably right about the usb interface. I was poking around in the WiFi hotspot settings and changed the network band from 2.4 to 5ghz. Now I get a 300mbs connection speed. Its not quite the full speed but better than anything I've had before.
