Chaps,

After some advice, as this is the first time I've been in this position.

My current policy runs out on the 13th September but I'm not due to collect the new car until the 25th September. This leaves me with 12 days to bridge.

Clearly, I don't want to renew my old policy (£209) for the full year for the sake of 12 days and my insurer (esure) don't do temporary cover. So what are my options?

I rang them to explain the situation and they suggested renewing the policy on the old car then changing the policy to match the details of the new car and I'd have to pay the difference in premiums. However... they're quoting me £1100+admin fee to change the vehicle details, which is crazy as I have already had quotes for a standalone policy for the new car for £430 with Hastings etc.

I've looked at temporary insurance on the old car to get me "across the line" then taking a fresh policy on the new car starting on 25th. Temporary cover is coming in at approx £100 for 12 days cover, which I found steep but I can't be without the old car as I'll need it for work. Thoughts?

Also, I have 15 years NCB, so what happens with this if I take a temporary policy for the 12 days? Surely it won't jump to 16 years but as I say... I've not been in this position before

Thanks!

Speak to Hastings, see what their position is.
May take new policy and then change car.

Perhaps direct line, they may be a little more expensive than most but they also seem more flexible on (no silly fees) for changing.
I even added a second car ~ £10 a week in the period my New car arrived and before I sold the old one.

The cheapest insurers, hook you in then make the cash on the changes many people have.

Can Hastings insure your current car at a competitive rate? They're all such random number generators it is hard to get a solid promise from them on changing it for your new car 12 days-odd in.

I'd spend the hundred for temp cover to avoid the risk.

I'm with admiral.

We bought a car (18 plate cmax), and also kept the old car.

It cost me £90 to change the policy to the cmax and also have 1 month temp on the old car whilst I get it ready for sale.

This is what worries me.... I'll end up paying the same amount for any change as just doing them both separately.

I'll see what Hastings say and try getting something in writing. Annoyingly, I only have 2 months on the MOT too, so I'll need to wait another month before I can get it re-tested then WBAC-it.

Hey,
Oh the admin charge was £9, the rest was the additional premium for the newer car and also the temp insurance.
I thought it was very cheap to be honest

12 days is convenient, it's less than the 14 day cooling off period. You should be able to start a new policy and then cancel it for a pro-rata refund without any cancellation fee (although it seems a lot of insurers are getting around this by charging an "admin" fee to set up the policy instead).

Not sure if this applies to renewals however, but maybe an option to consider?

Have you considered some of the pay per hour/mile insurance companies? I've used Cuvva for when I've had to borrow a car, and just paid £3-4 pound a day when I needed to use the car, nothing for when I didn't need to use it.

Thanks, I'll take a look at the fine print of my renewal with esure. I may well just do this, although I will need to check the set up fee. Edit: it's £26.

Just spent a soul destroying amount of time on the phone to Hastings who took all of my details and turned around and said the underwriter wouldnt be able to insure the car (despite me having an online quote)

I have used Cuvva for temp insurance previously to drive a car home which a friend purchased (he drove his current car) for 1 day it cost me like £12. Edit: bearing in mind I was 20 and had my license a year

Also if Hastings wont insure, sounds like ya getting a fancy car, I would recommend one of the insurers such as Greenlight, Adrian Flux, Kieth Micheals as they do modified and "specialist" insurance. I got a really good quote from Greenlight on my quite modified Skoda Fabia where as others wouldnt insure me.

IME they are all a bunch of lying crooks! Admiral want to charge my £100 more this year on renewal yet I have not made a single claim or had any claims against me with them  so why penalise me for other bad drivers mistakes suddenly...also some drivel about Insurance Premium tax increasing

I would rather go the cheapest possible quote elsewhere £450 cheaper with lousy customer service :( its not like I will ever need to use them anyway  :p

Admiral are one of the best when it comes to calling up and getting a discount so don't wash your hands too quick. They did me a mega deal this year for me; one driver only having passed their test 2 years ago. It took about 3 mins on a call to the retentions team though.

I had to do a similar thing a few months back with Esure when i bought a new car, and needed to keep the old one insured for a week before getting rid of it.
Cheapest way by far for me was taking out a new policy with 0 NCB (as it was tied to the new car), then cancelling within the 2 weeks window, had no hassle with the cancellation myself

edit: just checked - ended up costing ~£30 total for me to have a car insured for 4 days, vs the £150+ quotes got for temp cover

Can't you just renew the insurance on the old car then cancel under the 14 days cooling off period?
They've got you over a barrel with that daft price to change vehicle.

I needed an emergency vehicle about a year and a half back so my mum called her insurer and asked to add me for a month and it was like 70 quid, alternatively they offered to add me onto her main policy properly for the remainder fo the policy (approx 4 month) simply for an admin fee of £22 or summit, which they then waived xD

Needed a mate to look over my car while I was away and he wasn't to keen using it 3rd party only on his insurance.
Asked to add him temp...

From 26/07 - 03/08
£56.51p for 3 week
£26 admin

Add him to policy in full...
£24.51
Policy ends on 26/11/21

They make it up as they go along, as the actual charge they added him for is less than the admin I reckon it woudl've been cheper to add him on at the start of the policy lol

Good call that's what I did its more or less the same as last year now but way better than the £200 extra they wanted to auto renewal charge me! Some of the other cheapo insurance companies were £300-400 cheaper but doubt you would get anywhere trying to claim anything.

This is what I ended up doing.

I shopped around for a cheap policy on the old car which starts today (ironically, doing a price comparison came in half the price for the same insurer  ), I'll just call up and cancel it and pay the £25 to cancel within 13.5 days ;)
