Hey all, I've had my main gaming PC about 3 and a half years now and would fancy an upgrade. I use it mostly for sim racing and occasionally ARMA3. I would like to keep as much of my existing rig as possible to keep costs down. I currently have an i5-8600K @ 4.8Ghz and an Aorus Ultra Gaming Z370 motherboard. Other specs:
GPU: Evga 3080 FTW3
PSU: Seasonic Focus 750W Platinum
Monitor: Samsung Odyssey G9
RAM: 16gb G Skill Trident Z (F4-3200C16D-16GTZR)
I game at the native resolution of the G9 (5120 x 1440).
Budget about £500 but can be stretched if I need a new PSU.
1) Simplest and cheapest option is to drop in an i9-9900K. I would want to run it at 4.8Ghz at least, so I'm not certain whether my PSU will need to be upgraded to 850W which would add to the cost. I know the VRM cooling has been flagged as a potential issue too with my particular board, but it might not be a problem as I just use my rig for gaming.
2) Change motherboard to X570 and go with Ryzen 5 5600x (thinking of the new MSI Tomahawk x570s board). I'm pretty sure I won't need a PSU upgrade here, so this is a good value proposition. There is quite a bit of work with this option in taking out the old motherboard, figuring out the cabling for the new mobo, reinstalling windows, setting up all my peripherals again etc. However I have to realise this offers an upgrade path and no pain no gain
3) Change motherboard to Intel Z490 board and go with i9-10850K (10th gen pricing is very keen at the moment). I feel like I'm getting a significant upgrade here with 10 cores and 20 threads and may offer some kind of longevity. Will definitely need a new PSU though.
I know the FPS gains will likely be small with a CPU upgrade, but it will make the PC generally more responsive. Would welcome any opinions on the above.
