Water cooling a RTX 3080 FE - is it worth it?

Hi all

Im interested in potetnially investing in a water cooling setup primarily to water cool a RTX 3080 FE. Never watercooled before so a littel unsure if it warrants the expense.

Just wanted to reach out and ask those who have water coled there 3080 FE's if it is worth the investment? How much differene in performacne is there in a Watercooled 3080FE over and air cooled one. Also what are the temps like for GPU, MEM Junction and Hotspots like?

I would imagine that its around +£300 for the kit required? Was thinking of purchasing the Corsair products for water cooling, will they be ok ?

You'll be looking at way more than £300 for the complete setup. The blocks alone are in the £200+ mark, then you got the pump, radiator, reservoir, tubing, fittings and extensions, maybe adapters if things don't quite reach where you need them to get to.

Can very quickly rack up a big bill.

Aint that the truth. I believe mine came to just over £1,300. That ended up with a nice little bank of spares.


Worth the investment you say? Hell yes! You can end up seeing the GPU not breaking 50C with a hot spot of 55C. Great temperatures comes with silence but there will always be little snags. As it's practically mechanical lego you're working with.

I thought i was done then i bought a MO-RA360 and now i can finally say im happy sitting at 38c while gaming :cry:.

Agreed mate, i always say this, the quieter the pc with mega low temps the higher the price is gonna be. If you go into watercooling with the mindset of spending around £1k then you're on the right track!

Plus watercooling looks pretty
 
Raw performance is based on GPU clock and peak performance is typically at maximum (boost) clock. If this can be achieved with the fansink then watercooling will not change anything. The next step is overclocking and again the same situation - if you can reach the limit of your particular GPU with aircooling then watercooling will not do any better for performance. I guess there may be many reasons why people choose to watercool - mine was to have a gaming system which is much quieter than the equivalent aircooled system at both idle and maximum performance. I'm pretty sure that I succeeded but at considerable cost.

I can live with it, but if it gets worse it's RMA or waterecool. Cant see me letting this card out of my sight though.

It's earning me £5 a day at the moment and keeping house warmish
 
I got my alphacool block for just under £150, but it certainly isn't a cheap goal by any stretch. Imo the quiet and extra boost clock you get for temp control is worth it but everyone has their price!

Sometimes it makes me wonder which was louder, that or the GeForce FX 5800 Ultra. That thing was no joke in your own house. Windows Media Player would set it off even on the desktop.

Look how tiny the heatsink is on that trashy GPU. 9800pro was so much better than the FX. Was the 5800 Ultra louder than the 2900xtx AKA " The Leaf blower".
