If you think that they’ve possibly asked for it, send it, (providing you have it), they’ll return any certificates that are submitted, so you should get it back whether they needed it or not.

I'm guessing it's not an adult passport because I don't remember ever needing my parents birth certificates for my first passport ever as an adult.
