2021 Season Chilli Growing

lots of my chillies are starting to ripen now which is great but have been struggling to deal with aphids this year. Have tried a few rounds of neem oil sprays which seems to have done nothing. Luckily they're in my conservatory so it was ages before any aphid issues arose, and it's not as bad as previous attempts which were outside but still, annoying!

Also, it seems some of the plants (especially lemondrop) might have gotten disease from somewhere as some of the leaves are discolouring.

Question is, are the chillies still safe to eat if the plant isn't healthy and have had aphids? If the fruits look okay..

I am seeing clumps of aphids on my plants now. The plants themselves don't seem to be affected. I have been taking the plants outside. Spiders seem to like setting up shop in them and I have seen ladybirds on the plants but the aphids seem to just grow in number.

Once I have collected all the pods I'll be deciding which are my favourite. Choc BBG looks like it has in fact died. Still heavy despite not being watered in weeks. Not sure I want to try the pod either.

I'm pretty pleased with my haul this year, despite having a limit imposed on the amount of plants I was allowed. The Apaches and Basket of Fire were prolific and I got a reasonable number Armageddons as well, although they were quite late to fruit. There are still a decent amount left on the plants ripening but I think they'll be my last for the year as my porch is getting cooler now. It's also been my first year in quite a few that I've been aphid free!

Lovely haul!

Hey fellow growers. I lost my beloved plants last year to frost. I'd had some for 3 years, so it was tough. Got green fly, so took them outside for the ladybirds, but we had a snap frost and it took them down.

This has led me to plan a decent start for new stuff! I have some awesome seeds on their way, which will be here next week. I'm determined to cut costs here, so decided I'm going to do some great indoor urban growing indoors (can move things outside in the summer when it's hot enough) in my grow tent.

I have planned:

- Potatoes
- Garlic
- Ginger
- Lemongrass
- Cabbage

- Spinach
- Romain Lettuce
- Cobb Lettuce
- Rocket
- Bell peppers

- 6 types of Tomatoes
- Cucumbers
- Butternut squash

- I have strawberries to hang in there
- Raspberries
- Blueberries

- Sage
- Basil
- Coriander
- Parsley
- Mint

Plus all my chilies :D

Luckily the space is pretty big and the lights are pretty powerful. Easily enough to cover the required space, as long as it all fits. I've planted the garlic, potatoes and have used some rooting powder to try and prop some mint, sage, lettuces, cabbage and lemongrass and they're in there. Will see how they go.
Just about to put 6 types of tomatoes into jiffy plugs to germinate and have some bell peppers sat in there currently.

The wait... what will work? If anything? :D

I need to pop to the shops tomorrow and get some more soil/compost.

I know it's not all chilies but wasn't a thread for all this!

Got some pics of where I am right now :)

Sacks from left to right are Ginger (just gone in today), garlic and chives, last is potatoes. They've (other than ginger for obvious reasons) just started sprouting, which is ace! I wasn't sure how long they'd take but pleased something is happening.

Lettuces coming up a treat! One romain, one cobb! used offcuts from ones I had in the kitchen. Planted and they're coming back.

Seeds here are parsley, coriander and basil. Nothing from the coriander yet but the others coming in nicely.

Cheated and bought mint, rosemary and thyme :D

Also got the sage there I took from cuttings, root powder on them and hoping they'll grow. The lemongrass isn't looking so special, so might try by some fresher ones and try again if they don't work out.

Strawberries and in the plugs I have some Aji lemon chilies, bell peppers and 6 of them are tomatoes (6 different types) so hopefully I see them coming out soon.

Chili seeds should arrive this week, I have some absolutely corking types...

Borg 9 Red
Yellow 7 Pot / Pod Chill
Big Yellow Mama Chilli
Carolina Reaper Chilli
Death Spiral
Big Mustard Mama
Purplegum Yellow – bleeding calyx
BBG MAMP Black
BBG MAMP Berrygum
CP115 Butch T X Douglah

So they should be... hot?

I have something arriving today but forget what it is... maybe the spinach and raspberry and blueberry plants? I forget now but it'll be getting filled up more soon!

Hey guys, Happy New Year!
Hope everyone had a great break over the holidays.
The end of my 2021 season was a good one, I had an epic harvest and picked more chillis than any other year I think plus a wide variety too.
Most got turned into hot sauces from fresh and the rest dehydrated into powders for usage in the future (I'm not a fan of freezing really).

Starting to think about next year....
I think I' going to go for less plants and varieties that tend to be a bit smaller.
This year I had too many and some that got huge and a points it all became it bit too much to juggle.

Any suggestion on small / dwarf varieties to grow?
A mix of mild, warm, hot and super hot is what I am aiming for :)
If anyone has seeds they are prepared to share then I would certainly be interested!

Take care guys!

Hi all

Going to take some tentative steps into growing my own this year, initially with these :

And suggestions welcome ! :D

Popped some jalapenos in the heated propogator today. I have some more jalapeno seeds on the way along with organge habanero, biquinho, padron pepper and big bomb seeds. Looking forward to getting some new plants on the grow.

Well my 5 year old over wintered Fatalli has started growing again, i even left it outside most of December, instead of normally bringing it in at start of November/end October, usually they only last 2 or 3 years, cant believe it.

I harvested my last lot of Armageddons over the weekend and finally got rid of the plant. My porch is pretty cold now so the last lot took ages to ripen!

This year, I've gone for Trinidad Scorpions and Tabasco. I've never had much joy with Tabascos previously, but I've got so many dried chillies from this year and last to get through it wouldn't be the end of the world if I had a bad crop.

I had a terrible season last year, don't know whether to bother again. I usually use south devon chilli seeds, any others I should look at?

Interesting. I've left two of mine in the shed and they look very dead right now, so will see come spring whether they start to grow again.

I reckon they will be dead im afraid, i bring them in house to over winter, my shed still gets below zero, chillis only good really above 10c.

Did you not want to over winter it, you just cut down to a 9 inch stick and chuck on a window ledge in home, best chillis from plant i find year 2 or 3 for me.
