Blinds or curtains for bedroom?

Smaller pilot hole first, right bits and right drill combine to make more straight holes, otherwise the pressure you put on the drill to try and get through sends it all off at angles.

It's probably overkill for most jobs but my Titan 7kg SDS drill from Screwfix will get through anything and what I've used to get through the lintels above my windows when fitting curtain poles and blinds.

I got EcoWood Venetian blinds from 247blinds.co.uk for master bedroom and they are brilliant.

We have roller blinds in the kids bedroom but have curtains as well - I wouldn't put only roller binds in a bedroom, no.

Thanks for the help guys. Yeah I was using the wrong tip, a black HSS. I did try the silver ones too. They're very very old black and decker bits that I'm going to throw.

I'm popping down to screwfix to get that set of tungsten carbides linked by t-rex, certainly inexpensive enough. I'll see if I can drill holes for the left and right brackets without resistance. If so, I might be able to hang the pole without using the middle bracket.

I wish I could find some slab of spare masonry to practise using my drill on first to see how precise I can line up a couple of holes. :p But I'll start with a smaller pilot drill bit.

Well chaps, I thought while I'm there I might as well go the whole hog and ended up buying De Walt wood bits as well. I also own no screwdriver bits for my drill and bought a 32 piece set with a mix of PZ and PH. Very good reviews on them, only £9.99.

For me, those erbauer masonry bits glide straight through brick. I have the screwdriver bits too, and use them with my impact driver. They're excellent so far, much tougher than regular bits.

Thanks t-rex for the recommendation. Well I didn't go the wood lintel route or double length screws, but I've just had a go at the middle bracket again with the new erbauer 6mm drill bit. With the hammer setting on my drill, (which is much noisier! :D ) it went through the tough material that was resisting. Don't know if my old bits would have as I didn't use the hammer mode yesterday, but I'm sure these new ones have made lighter work of it. So now I'm getting somewhere! I'll need to put filler in those holes and paint over. I tested offering the pole up and surprisingly it looked like it sat pretty straight on this bracket.

Thanks billybob. Well I've still to drill the final right bracket holes but this is how it's looking. My OCD says it's not straight enough because of the middle bracket, but due to my lack of skill I guess it's ok?
I used a screw driver bit for the first time. Forgot to switch drill from hammerhammer mode, no wonder it didn't screw anything in :p Kind of awkward getting it under the bracket though to fully meet the screw head face on.

I did it. :) I actually ended up drilling higher on the right side and ignoring my markings to compensate for the middle bracket but I wish I'd gone with my markings as now it seems higher on the right. But, meh, it's fine. After removing the bin liners that have been up for weeks, I used No Nonsense sealant remover to remove the sellotape residue that was on quite stubbornly. No Nonsense is absolutely amazing stuff, it completely cleans up. I'll fill the hole under the middle bracket tomorrow and I believe the paint is somewhere around.

We've inherited horrible blackout blinds in our bedrooms and with sash windows it's a PITA. E.g. going to bed and want to open the top sash, have to open the blind practically all the way. Ugh. But it depends on your outlook. Or rather how overlooked you are. Our bedroom is at the front of the house so when I do that with the light on and my girlfriend is already in bed I'm sure she loves being put on display to the neighbours :p (Of course she won't open the window herself before she goes to bed..)

Sidenote, seems a good a thread as any... What do you guys think about shutters and curtains aesthetically? I think it can look quite good but my other half isn't so sure. We'll definitely be getting shutters as we want those pretty much throughout. I thought curtains would help more with blocking light (and street noise) and soften the room a bit.

Look at the thread date :p But to answer your question, I prefer the mixture of blinds and curtains too. As you say, curtains block street noise far more effectively whilst the blinds / shutters stop the light in spring / summer.
