So my PC is due a little upgrade I think, it's 5 years old now nearly and as I play at 1440p, it does struggle a little on some games. Would appreciate any advice on where is best to spend my money.

I use it solely for gaming.

This is my current set up:

- GTX 1080ti (I will be keeping this as I'm not paying the ridiculous price of graphics cards at the moment and still feel it can do a job at 1440p)
- Ryzen 1700 CPU
- 16gb Corsair Vengeance 3000mhz RAM
- Corsair 750w PSU
- GIGABYTE AB350-Gaming 3 Motherboard
- 2 SSDs and 1 HDD for storage.

Was thinking the CPU could do with an upgrade, so would also need to change motherboards. Maybe stick an m.2 stick in there as well.

I don't really want to spend more than £400. What do you reckon?

If that motherboard has good enough VRMs, install an AMD 5600X or 5800X.

you could get faster ram (DDR4-3600 is ideal) too.

save the rest of your money for a new GPU in 2 years time when the whole shortage is resolved.

Intel new Alderlake have just been released which are only k chips but soon the non k chips with b660 motherboards should be out.

11400f for £150 with a b560 motherboard is a decent upgrade as an alternative otherwise a 5600x and a b550 motherboard gonna cost around £350.

My motherboard wouldn't support a 5600x would it?
No, it doesn’t support AMD 5000 series CPUs.

Id get a new motherboard and cPu if I was you, keeping your ram and rest of the items to save a bit of money.

What’s your budget? Edit: £400

you could easily get an AMD bundle for £400. Or look at 12th gen Intel for great options.

the good news is that there is no bad option these days when it comes to CPUs.

Thanks for the advice guys.

Just been doing a bit of research and as I game at 1440p, I'm reading that I'll hardly get any FPS gains with a 5600x over the 1700? Seems to be more of an upgrade if you play at 1080p. Am I wrong?

Your correct but going to a 5600x maybe give you 10 to 20% more fps at 1440p but also the the 1% low fps will increase .

Thought as much. Do you think the £350 it's going to cost me for a new motherboard as well is worth it? Or shall I wait to see what AMD come out with next?
If your not struggling for fps then wait as intels non k Alderlake cpus should be out soon with a b660 motherboard.

I'd try pick up a 3700X for sub £200 and sit on that for a couple of years till the new DDR5 platforms are more mature and mainstream.

That's another option I've considered. Do you think I'll see a good bump from my 1700 in games at 1440p?

I've managed to find a 3800x going for £190, would you say that's a good deal?

Atleast I don't have to worry about a motherboard upgrade then.
