Rechargeables for tado Trvs?

Wanted to make a specific thread for this.

My tado Trvs are quite active motoring along and thus batteries (I do not currently have good ones) are getting chewed up.

I want rechargeables but the ones off amazon do not physically fit! Too fat. Never had a battery not fit due to capacity.

Can I ask exactly what brand/make/model etc of battery people are using?

I've been told by tado 'eneloop' and I assume the small 1900 white ones.but no exact details.

With Evohome I've done rechargeables barely last a year. Best I have found is lithium batteries get a few years out of those.
Amazon are eneloops though aren't they just a generation older than the current eneloops.

The Amazon brand rechargeables are a non-standard size...the positive end is too short and doesn't make contact.

Funnily enough, the only appliance for which this is an issue for me is a TRV...but in my case, they are Bosch branded. Probably the same as Tado and rebranded....

What mAh are the ones you're using atm? What size are they AAA or AA or something else?

These are AA.

They are too thick in width.
They are 2000mah which is not high by any means.

This may explain why they are too wide but not high capacity. Gonna check them now next to my. 2800mah ones (which also do not fit)

I wouldn't say 2000 is low by any means either.

How long are you finding they last? Are they using a single AA?

I'd have thought all smart TRV's will be using the same size battery.

I'm not sure. I can't quite remember how if I've changed any one of the trvs 3 times. I've moved them around a bit. Started with old batteries etc.

For some reason the casting of the trv battery compartment is so narrow there is no room to spare. I almost couldn't get the wider circumference battery out.

Here's my. Unscientific evidence

Battery bottoms leveland straight to camera

Amazon rechargeable on left
Duracell alkaline on right

If they're scheduled/automated to frequently adjust, then i can imagine this'll impact on the longevity of the charge. If they're only reporting metrics (temperature/TRV setting) then they should be able to go for ages, but having to run a motor is pretty battery draining.

Yeah they definitely look different sized.

I'm sure i've got some rechargeable Duracell AA's, and non-rechargeable AA's around, i'll have a look and see if they're the same size. Might just be an Amazon battery thing.

Edit: Have you got a set of callipers you could measure them with?

No unfortunately. Nothing to make a reliable measurement.
My hiquick. 2800 I can forgive for being thicker. But I thought as these were so low in mah size would be OK.

Problem is you have to open the battery pack. To check this

I've got a Duracell 1300mAh which is 14.23mm in dia
A cheapo Aldi active energy which is 14.20mm in dia
Also found a Duracell 2400mAh which is 14.20mm in dia.

I looked at rechargeable batteries for my Drayton Wiser TRVs but Drayton advise against them because:

Most standard rechargeable batteries have a lower starting voltage than conventional disposable batteries, which means the Wiser Radiator Thermostat will not get the voltage required to drive the motor as designed
There’s a post on the Tado community support where they say they only officially support one type of rechargeable battery - the Eneloop 1900 NiMh rechargeable batteries and only for the VA02 hardware revision of the TRVs. Hopefully someone who uses Tado can add more useful info on what that means! From the comments it looks like people have found some other rechargeable batteries that work.

Yes I'm aware. I've moved all my Trvs to V2. So. Should be good to go. Not even sure all. Eneloop 1900s are the same

I'm using 1900mAh Eneloops in my TRV's and have no issues. I've got the VA02 hardware as per that Tado post above. I've always stuck to Eneloop as my choice of batteries for years.

Some other batteries like Amazon and EBL use thicker wrappers too, which doesn't help when inserting them into devices so I avoid them outright. Too many dodgy fakes floating around these days, the same with Li-Ion cells.

Yeah so many fakes. You can't even guarantee amazon ones are legit anymore.
