My father in law has, over the last 12 months had to have some pretty serious / intrusive repairs done in his kitchen due to mice chewing through his dishwater pipes.

Basically they chewed through the drainage ("out") pipe so the dishwasher was functional in terms of washing the dishes but in its rinse / pump out phase it was just spraying water under his suspended timber floor.

It only became apparent when some cracking appeared in the floor tiles Infront of the units (due to floor movement) and the dishwasher "playing up" they then started to chew Fe feed ("in") pipe so it wasn't filling up ) getting errors.

This has obviously been going on for some time as when the dishwasher was pulled out apart from the pipes being completely obliterated the water damage was substantial to the joists, floorboards and then subsequently the floor had moved, cracking the floor tiles and opening the joint between the granite worktop and wall tiles.

Insurance have paid for it all and was a very long winded process of drying out the floor void, repairing the timbers, removing and replacing the floor tiles throughout the.litxhen and adjoining utility while retaining the kitchen units and granite worktops without damaging them.

However he is concerned that it may happen again and is looking for preventative measures / solutions.

Getting a cat / cats, traps etc isn't an option as he is surrounded by crop fields and will never stop them.

We have seen "metal" / braided supply and drain pipes but he has been advised by a plumber they are not suitable for dishwashers (!?!?) Even though some state they are for dishwashers

"Rodent tape" doesn't, from the reviews I have seen, seem to work

Perhaps some metal braid sheathing or tie wrap something like wire wool to the pipes to stop the little buggers?

As an aside they have also in the past chewed through the battery cables and fuel lines on his car

Any experience of dealing with this or suggestions are welcomed

A good helping of mouse poison / pest control devices, plus sealing up the exterior holes where these pests are getting in.

You can't reinforce, it's an entrenchment position you will surely loose as they breed so much.

If they're in the home as they are they won't just be behind the dishwasher but at times they'll be all over counter tops etc. Not a healthy situation for it to be ongoing.

You can try wrapping the pipe with a stainless steel mesh or tie wrap stainless steel souring pads (those round ones) apparently they don't like those as it hurts their nose.

You can get 25mm Flexion galvanised conduit that you should be able to run the plastic pipe through.

Thank you and did come across this, but not sure you would get it over the end / fittings?

As I said it's a very rural setting and don't think any amount of poison / traps would help. They are not in the kitchen just in the floor voids and, it would appear, in the back of the dishwasher

Does rodent tape really not work.. I think Honda do an own brand chilli pepper infused one to stop them chewing coolant hoses on cars.

From the reviews I've read, no it doesn't work :(

That's the route I think we're going down, bit there must be a proprietary system out there! ?

use a ferret .. no really get some one with a ferret let it run round the kitchen for an hr or so .. or some ferret poo .. you will never see or hear a mouse again ..

They're not "in" the kitchen as such, under the floor void then popping up behind the dishwasher and chewing the pipes.

Not sure how his dog would take to that either

Rodent repelling plug in things, buy a pack from amazon and plug a few in around the home, maybe one under the units on an extension and forget. They work a treat and have got rid of problems I had in the shed with mice as well as ridding my work property of squirrels in the roof. Dogs and Cats are unaffected. Worse side effect we had was my daughters room over the garage suddenly had lots of spiders in it as they moved away from the sound :D

Easiest way is to wrap the pipe with wire mesh to stop them coming in. If they are in the suspended floor then have you tried to wire mesh over the air bricks? In my previous property, they were coming in via the air bricks so we meshed them all out around the property and didnt have a problem afterwards until they started in via the loft (Terraced house).

Probably best to look at why they want in first of all, i had a small infestation due to leaving grass seed sitting in the shed. Removed the seed and 'dealt' with the intruders with the peanut butter bucket method, worked a treat.
