My father in law has, over the last 12 months had to have some pretty serious / intrusive repairs done in his kitchen due to mice chewing through his dishwater pipes.
Basically they chewed through the drainage ("out") pipe so the dishwasher was functional in terms of washing the dishes but in its rinse / pump out phase it was just spraying water under his suspended timber floor.
It only became apparent when some cracking appeared in the floor tiles Infront of the units (due to floor movement) and the dishwasher "playing up" they then started to chew Fe feed ("in") pipe so it wasn't filling up ) getting errors.
This has obviously been going on for some time as when the dishwasher was pulled out apart from the pipes being completely obliterated the water damage was substantial to the joists, floorboards and then subsequently the floor had moved, cracking the floor tiles and opening the joint between the granite worktop and wall tiles.
Insurance have paid for it all and was a very long winded process of drying out the floor void, repairing the timbers, removing and replacing the floor tiles throughout the.litxhen and adjoining utility while retaining the kitchen units and granite worktops without damaging them.
However he is concerned that it may happen again and is looking for preventative measures / solutions.
Getting a cat / cats, traps etc isn't an option as he is surrounded by crop fields and will never stop them.
We have seen "metal" / braided supply and drain pipes but he has been advised by a plumber they are not suitable for dishwashers (!?!?) Even though some state they are for dishwashers
"Rodent tape" doesn't, from the reviews I have seen, seem to work
Perhaps some metal braid sheathing or tie wrap something like wire wool to the pipes to stop the little buggers?
As an aside they have also in the past chewed through the battery cables and fuel lines on his car
Any experience of dealing with this or suggestions are welcomed
