Christmas spirit

I thought that Crème de Menthe went out around the same time as spats, and Malibu went out with flares, but what do I know, they both may be the tipple of the up and coming crowd.
I’ve never tried Advocaat, but it suspect that it’s very sweet, and it always makes me think of eggnog which is popular at Christmas in the U.S.

Heh, all of those drinks have an image problem.

I associate Creme de Menthe with seedy, predatory old actors. Not through personal experience, I hasten to add.

Does not compute?

There's a world of difference between a good and terrible vodka, just the same as there is whisky

I find there's less of a difference with Vodka as there is with Whisky. Once you get up to a decent level where it doesn't just burn.

Although Borders did an amazing Vodka, but their website doesn't seem to have it anymore. (EDIT - I rang them and it seems the Vodka they now sell is the same, just slightly rebranded). I recommended it to everyone.

I did ask what he was going to drink it with, I wouldn't suggest drinking a bottle of Glen's if you're drinking it straight. However, any of the main brands are fine if you're mixing imo. But, if drinking straight and new to it then I'd recommend Russian Standard Platinum.

I think we need to remember who is asking for the recommendation, if they are new to any spirit, a £50 suggestion from a specialist site probably isn't the best suggestion. Rather, something they can pick up during the supermarket shop and something affordable would fit the bill.

I'd also suggest if you don't like vodka then there's probably not a vodka out there which will change your mind. The same isn't true for whisky. Usually you hate whisky because it's too smoky (get a Lowland), too peaty (get a speyside), too strong (stay off the cask strength, and add a touch of water), etc.

If I live to be forty, I will never understand what you sassenachs have against drinking.

I think that I qualify as a sassenach, but I’ve seen one definition of the word as “foreigner”, so I guess that I am in there somewhere.
This possible sassenach has nothing against drinking, there have been rare occasions when I’m not really in the mood for getting plugged in, so I decline, but these occasions are rare.

So they'd have you think.

I don't think I've ever tried a drop of Japanese whisky. I'm not in a hurry to either, still plenty of 'local' scotches for me to try.

I got given a bottle once that a colleague had bought her husband not long before a divorce and had had it unopened for around 2 years before she gave.

It was nice enough, but at £60 there are plenty Scottish Whiskies i'd have taken over it. Which seems to be a common perception, can be great but for the prices involved they get edged out.

Same, Nikka was lovely but not worth the extra money.

Terrible pun alert

If they want shots, go with a pornstar martini as then you get a shot of prosecco on the side. Could add some orange into it to make it more festive!

Random story - Was once in a "cocktail bar", on the cocktail menu, they had a pornstar martini but nothing normal. I asked if i could just get a regular Vodka martini and the waitress looked at me blankly and then said she'd have to check, and then came back saying they didn't have the ingredients... It was at that point even my wife realised the cocktails were likely to be awful and we got up and left.
Haha similar story but at the other end of the spectrum. I asked for some cheeky vimtos for a drinking game and they said sorry we don't have the ingredients. Then happily supplied us with 2 bottles of wkd and several ports.

Tia maria if you make an espresso martini
Toffee vodka I never tried
Sourz I don't like
Taylor's port is ok a small glass
Amaretto if you make an amaretto sour is drinkable
Midori maybe if you mix in a cocktail
Prosecco only to make a toast

It's only the prosecco I'm not going to use for shots and I know that Midori's used in a Japanese Typhoon.
Taylor's port seems to be only available in the shops at this time of year
Your dislike of Sourz means more for people who do (I don't drink it on a regular basis)
Toffee Vodka's available from the manchester Christmas market. The stall holder pours samples out for people to try. But what I might do is add it to some coke and white wine.
If I ever drink white wine it has to be Prosecco.
I believe the irish drink Tia maria with milk.

Yeah. Similar story but reversed. At a Christmas party at the Hilton in Manchester. Got towards the end and I asked for a Whisky but was told they weren’t allowed ti serve shots.

So asked for a double whisky and coke in separate glasses. Picked up the whisky glass and walked out.

Bars can be so weird sometimes.

Fair enough, although, if you're mixing it then probably best to stick with Jack Daniels and not waste your money on something nice when you aren't going to taste it anyway (nothing wrong with a Jack and Coke, but I wouldn't dream of mixing a nice single malt with anything!)

With vodka, in my experience the subtle differences in taste only really come out when it's fresh from the freezer, again if you're mixing it or making cocktails then just stick with whatever is on offer at the supermarket :p

Is Jack & coke a UK drink - developed for UK culture where people just want to get drunk .. along with how many others - alco-shots market - the 'diverse'gin market - shame on uk.
