Firstly, this is an old system and also a tank system.

My heating just attempted to fire up and I was woken by a loud pipe type noise (not near the boiler, in the attic) before I grabbed my phone and set all heating off.

Boiler is reporting a lockout fault

The pipes have been rattling a bit. Obviously need to find a gas engineer for this, anyone had similar?

Might be worth checking the header tank in the loft if it's a vented system, see if the float valve has seized up not allowing fresh water in.

Yeah I’d do some basic checks first.

Is the pump spinning?
Is it full of water?

You probably don’t need a gas engineer just a plumber.

I'll have a look. Basically looking for lack. Of water?

Feel it's something like an air lock or some symptom of lack of water pressure

How can I tell?
I have a suspicion it is the pump.its very hot. So hot I turned off the electric to it. It is also 'buzzing'. Or at least I think it is.

I tried what I think was bleeding it but no water came out. Not completely sure I'm doing it right however

Have a friend gas/plumber froend popping over just to have a look later. Hopefully he can at least diagnose

Edit.
I believe the heat from the pump is it trying to pump and being unable to.
So. I'm looking at a faulty pump and/or an air lock.

I'm guessing an airlock is the culprit and root cause as the pipes have been noiser last few weeks than they were when moved in.
The pump may be a casualty of the airlock.

Yeah it's a tank which has the same valve as a toilet would for filling up. If it's stuck and run dry then you'll encounter problems like this.

First thing I'd do is start by bleeding one radiator and see if any water is in them. If so continue bleeding any air. If they seem like no water or air check the header tank to see if it's full and filling.

First thing I would do is check header tank - Mate said his rads were hot half way up and his turned out to be a stuck valve in header tank.

If it's stuck and you have a small leak anywhere your water in rads/pump etc- your system could be getting dry.

Banging could be boiler over heating if it's not being fed enough water - had same problem just before Christmas, culprit was a blockage just below the pump, that in turn knackered the pump we had. Luckily brother in Iaw is a plumber and gas engineer, old pump whipped off, blockage cleared and new pump fitted. He also drained down the system, cleaned out the header tank and mag filter, then filled and bled the whole system. Running great now.

First sign of the problem were radiators taking ages to warm up, and the old pump sounding very aerated (blockage must have been forming), gradually got worse over a few weeks before culminating in the boiler overheating and shutting down.

So was the pump.
Had failed. Got a new one put in. Needed the connectors replaced too as these had seized.

Not too bad considering the potential issues of heating failing.
