With AM5 + Zen 4 coming in H2 2022, is anyone still planning to build an Alder Lake system?

Depending on the core count if we are seeing 20+ cores
How does 32 Zen 4C cores on AM5 sound? Bear in mind that Zen 4 chiplets are still 8 cores, so a dual chiplet Raphael SKU would still max out at 16 cores.

However, given the AM5 socket is the same dimensions as AM4, it's not outside the realms of possibility that AMD could fit 3 5nm chiplets into the package since the new 7nm IO die will be so much smaller That's 24 cores and would likely make use of the 170W AM5 is rated for.

Honestly though even if this newly released 12100F does well against an older 6 core 3600 CPU in those titles above, I would not recommend gamers who needs to upgrade rush out to buy a 4 core CPU in 2022.
Use a bit more and get a 6 core CPU like the 12400 with the soon to be released B660 motherboards or a 5600X CPU with a B550 motherboard and you will be much better equipped and ready for future games like Dying Light 2 and TW: Warhammer 3.

I waited to see what AMD would do with the 3D cache. Suffice to say I have a 12900k on my shopping list. Just waiting for DDR5 to become available.

I'd be highly surprised if you get anything right Dave, the prophet who declared the 11900K was the best thing in the world.

I think the chance that AM5 and Zen 4 will be delivered on time and outperform all of Intels share holder lake chips, is better than good.

Zen4 probably still wouldn’t be much of match against a Dave2150 11900K at 5.2Ghz though :p

5800x3D first then I wait for Zen4 and am5 and ddr5 to mature, price to normalize and then maybe 2023 sometime upgrade to zen4.
*Intel has nothing to offer anymore

I think we will have to wait for AM6 and Zen 7 until Dave2150's 11900K is beaten..............after all, it is THE best thing out there :p

He's the sort of person who I'd imagine watching The Verge PC build video and following it to the letter.

It's highly likely 2H will turn into 1H 2023 as well IMO. Would not be surprised if Zen4 competes with Intel's 14th gen Meteor Lake, their 3rd generation on DDR5/PCIEv5.

Why? There are already engineer samples of Zen4 out in the wild?

You are basing this on nothing at all. Yet Intel whom have chronic issues with release dates and deadlines your fine with Raptor Lake on time?

He is Intel troll confirmed, just ignore him.

Meteor Lake will compete with Zen 4, but it will do so probably 6-9 months after Zen 4's release.

Intel's still got Raptor Lake to come at the end of 2022, which I notice a lot of the excitement for, seems to have faded away.

Ppl not wowed by Intel saying they have a CPU that can run Windows :D

After Zen 4 announcements from CES, nobody is even talking about Raptor Lake. If Zen 4 is able to clock 5 ghz in early sample then it will be a beast when final revision come, literally every PC leaker believes that Zen 4 will beat Raptor Lake.

I'd guess it's because we now have a good idea of what Raptor Lake will bring, or arguably not bring. Don't get me wrong, Alder Lake is a big jump forward for Intel's competitiveness, but there are still red flags that are classic Intel, specifically insane power usage and gargantuan cooling requirements. But Raptor Lake isn't bringing much more to the table, it's a tweak of the big cores and doubling of the small cores. That's not going to bring massive gains and shows the current hybrid approach just isn't scalable.

And all the while, AMD retake (tbc of course) the gaming crown just by slapping a bit of cache on an existing design. And there's a brand new design coming before Rocket Lake is even out (again, tbc).

So for me at least, it's kinda hard to get excited by Raptor Lake when it's already looking to be DOA. "Just wait for Alder Lake" became "wait for Raptor Lake", and now seems to be "wait for Meteor Lake, you'll see". Is that going to become "wait for Lunar Lake"?

Well, Intel's 7nm EUV is about double the transistor density according to Intel, vs Intel @ 10nm. New fabrication tech is where Intel made their name, I guess they want to relive the glory days. This, plus Meteor Lake is a whole new CPU architecture, so I think it's quite hopeful.

They've got the 6nm GPUs coming eventually too, so I think they will do OK this year, and have a much better 2023.
