Build critique - based on RX580

A couple of years ago I picked up an 8GB RX580 to tide me over after my last GPU died. Little did I know then that 2 years later I'd be clinging onto it for dear life as GPU prices went nuts.

Anyway. I'm looking to replace my 12-ish year old build (in my sig) but keep the RX580. If things settle down in a year or two I'll see about replacing the GPU (with a budget of £400) but until then I need something to keep me going. This is what I've come up with based on some input from elsewhere, but my knowledge is over a decade out of date so I'd appreciate a critical eye.

My total budget is £700 (give or take £50) and I'll be buying at the end of the month. Gaming mostly, FPS like Insurgency, Overwatch, maybe Microsoft Flight Sim, plus a bit of Lightroom.
My main display is an editing orientated Benq 27" 1440p display. I'll be transferring over a couple of SATA SSD's that I use for my Steam library plus I'll be plugging in a couple of large external HDD's for photo storage and backup.
I'm not really planning to overclock but the room it's in tend to heat up in summer so slightly better than average wouldn't go amiss.

I don't strongly about any one component, but I do like RGB and am looking for a case that looks good.
And I hope I've understood correctly that with the CPU (12400F) the performance difference in 3600 over 3200 is negligible.
Mobo wise I've gone basic, I don't need wifi or BT but if there's another good reason to spend more, there's about £50 spare in the budget.

Anyway - build here. Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

1st, you need to take down names of competitors..it's against forum rules, just say price and 'away' or something



Seen 4000X case in white for £88 away with free delivery, just as something else...
could add 3 more sp elite fans, 2 on top, one at rear for full rgb/cooling effect

with existing above, the CM halo fans have additional ring of rgb

One thing to consider is the mobo..you have B660..prob irrelevant for type of gpu as comes with pcie4, but z690 comes with pcie5, so in 5 years down line, if you decide to get modern gpu that uses pcie5(next gen top end will from what i read), board is already set up...more important in my view is as you get more storage, with nvme prices dropping and becoming more mainstream, board has 4 slots rather than 2 on the b660 board

the crucial P5P is a faster gen4 drive than the 970 on offer at mo, or WD SN570 replaced the SN550 seen for £69 to £75 away

you can get the freezer 34 esport cpu cooler with single fan which is slightly cheaper(the coolers come in various colour accents too)..more than enough for a 12400F, or the brocken is another to look at.the cooler is slightly offset so as not to interfere with Ram

other option is something like below as alternative to b660 board...seen the R5 5600X on sale at £199 today away(that price of £319.99 is more than I paid for my 5800X)...put tomahawk board in as good(seen for £130),seen msi gaming plus £120, so ends up similar price to 12400 and b660

lastly, found a build with a 4000X, with B550 Gaming plus and 5600X...only diff is he uses an h100 capellix aio rather than fans and cpu cooler, but gives an idea of what it would look like built..saw it last night so checked price of 5600X hence above..

I think I'm sold on a Z690, someone else has pointed me towards the slightly cheaper Gigabyte - is that much of a compromise?
Crucial SSD makes sense, cheers.

I'm not quite sold on the looks of the 4000X. Although there's really not much in it.

Thanks for the cooler recommendation, it seems a better option.

Both cooler I put were sub£30, either the arctic freezer 34 or the brocken 120mm....the 120mm rated for tdp 170w and the 12400 rated 65w so think more than enough..I get the duo has 2 fans so you have the looks aspect but think they're £34 on ocuk rather than £37......but only talking a few £ diff so what's that...0.4% of build cost
As far as I can tell from quick look, the MSI board can take 4 nvme m.2's and the display port out on mobo is hdmi 2.1 HDR compliant, whereas the gigabyte board is 3 nvme and port is 2.0. Regarding other stuff, think as a 12400 going in there, both mobo more than capable, just look at whether it has connections you want and go for it
Regarding the psu, originally you has 2021 rm750 and changed it to the 2019 rm750 as slightly cheaper....if like the rmx variants, the newer version has a more durable fan, so may be worth the extra just for longevity sake

The alpenfhon is a better cooler but no skt 1700 for intel Alderlake cpu, the ventroo v5 has a tdp of 150w. It's says it's sky 1700 ready but the arctic freezer e34sport is a 200w tdp cooler with a free sky 1700 bracket .
 
I'd take the arctic personally..think it looks the nicest and having the bracket as mikey says means you have everything in the box..the twin fan variant tdp is 210W due to increased airflow, so you basically buying fore the looks as both more than capable for your needs

Wouldn't trust those TDP ratings, because there's even less standards for measuring that in coolers than in CPUs.
And no matter how many fans, Freezer 34 is plain standard size/mass heatsink with standard four heatpipes.
For comparison Brocken 3 is ~250 grams beefier.
