what motherboard did you buy for your alderlake cpu.

My 690 Gigabyte motherboard worked fine with XMP mode from the start using...

Crucial RGB 3200Mhz (16GB)
Corsair Vengeance 3200Mhz (32GB)
Corsair Vengeance 3600Mhz (16GB)
Corsair Vengeance 4000Mhz (16GB)

I am using the 4000Mhz rated sticks and just dialled in the XMP settings and all is well.

Considering that my 12700k is running a t5.1Ghz and 4Ghz and the IMC is on the chip the Gigabyte Aorus Elite board is doing well, as expected. IIRC it had BIOS version F2 when I first bought it and ran fine with the 32GB of 3200Mhz memory and XMP mode.
By the time I popped the 4000Mhz sticks in I was using the F6 BIOS.

I've not had a very good experience with Gigabyte overall and was thinking of the Gigabyte Gaming X Z690 with a 12600K however, undecided as yet.

@Mr G in what way, not good..?

I do enjoy using a gigabyte board, overall. Perhaps that has been influenced with their previous good UK based support. I once damaged a CPU socket on a new board. I told them what I did and they collected the board from me by courier and returned it fully repaired within the week. No charge.

Each have their own experiences but overall I'm happy with the Gigabyte board. If I had to pick an issue it would be that the M2 slots did not share a common cover but were individually accessible. I am using three M2 NVME drives.

I paid a little more and got the Aorus Elite.

I've had a few instances of bad QC on a board and GPU in the last 2 years. Is the Aorus Elite worth it over the Gaming X in terms of feature set etc.

Probably not worth the price difference. A bit of RGB on the I/o heatsink cover.
70 Amp power stage as opposed to 60.
Metal strengthening on two of the DIMM slots.

Same rear I/O.
Seems to be the same headers etc.

as long as you are aware of what you are paying for then it is up to you. I didn't mind paying for the Aorus. IIRC the place I bought it from had it at an offer price that made it very close to the cost of the Gaming X.

The Gaming X is currently £189.99 and Elite is £229.99. Gaming X fits the price bill and was thinking of pairing it with a 12400F?

You should enjoy such a combination :)

Either the MSI 690 A Pro or the Gigabyte is a very good choice imo. Have you thought about the MSI board..?

I have considered it. Watched Bulidzoids lengthy video and recommended the the Z690-A Pro and the Gigabyte.

Yup, both good boards. Difficult to say either one is the best.
I remember, if this counts, holding both of them next to each other. I didn't weigh them but the Gigabyte just seemed more solid and very well built. Probably doesn't add up to much as they are both most capable.

I guess if I was to pair the 12400F to the Gaming X it's going to need a BIOS update, easy to do via USB?

I have never needed to do it but both boards have the BIOS flash option from a USB stick using a certain port, the Gigabyte needs you to press a button on the board at the dame time the stick is inserted.

Not sure if you would need it for that CPU. But it is there.

Just checked and the Gaming X ships with a F4 BIOS that supports the 12400F out of the box. There is an F6 BIOS, Checksum: 1064, Fix Non-K CPU performance issue, Optimization for improved VRM and processor overclocking thermal performance (CPU load line adjustments), Improve DDR4 XMP 3200~3600MHz compatibility, Add Legacy Game Compatibility Mode option.

May hold out a few more weeks as prices are dropping slowly. Keeping my eye on this combo.

Seems a good choice

Never heard of prices actually dropping, unless they are then out of stock due to global shortages

£189.99 for the Gaming X, £176.99 for the 12400F currently. Going to need a LGA 1700 kit for my AIO too.

Yup, I got mine direct from Arctic for my AIO. No problems and free, but only when other kit bought and proven with a receipt.

Lets hope that stocks remain plentiful for you and prices are driven down......whatever next 3080Ti's at close to FE prices :D

I'm planning for ROG STRIX Z690-A GAMING WIFI D4, with a 12700k...

Would've gone for a TUF or PRIME, but I have 6 SATA drives inside my case...

Can anyone recommend a good mATX board? No interest in asthetics.
Initially looking to put an i3 and 3060 in it, but with view to a 3-4 year upgrade to an i7 and 3080/4080 to get long term use of this build - Z690 probably.

I have the MSI 690 A Pro DDR4 and so far, it's been an excellent board.

Rock solid.

Care to share what these 'Horror' stories are, or links? I can't see much posted on Msi's motherboard forums showing the Pro z690-A as having anymore niggles/user errors than any other motherboard. In fact not much at all.

Mine has been rock solid also. No sign of instability with an OC'd 12700KF and 3600 CL14 ram. Although I'm not wringing its neck in anyway, as its not built for that. Its not as if its a top of the line OC motherboard or anything.
