Big estate/SUV - opinions please!

Getting the feeling that petrol doesn't necessarily make a lot of sense here, but if going with the black pump then I think the E400d would be my pick just because there's no 540d in the UK

Haha.. any particular reason?

One's an SUV and one's a diesel.

If it is any help I have just got home after 130 mile drive from the Lakes fresh as a daisy in my 530D Touring. I changed from a 535D in 2020, like you wish they had done a 540D, but there isn't a huge difference in everyday performance. I had a look at the F Pace as well, just didn't like the cabin, its way off 5 series quality. Space - regularly travel with four of us, loads of room for all bags and 4 bikes on roof too, engine pulls just the same fully loaded up. Wish I had adaptive, pano roof and 19" not 20" wheels, thats about it.
Cheers! Really useful comparison actually thanks.

So the 20” wheels are best avoided then? They really do look like rubber bands on those wheels but that M Sport Pro pack is really common and loads of cars have the huuuge rims

Its just kerbing issues really, they look great and ride quality is fine.

Doing a lot of miles in a larger vehicle of any kind I'd rather bias towards the smaller rims and more rubber and an engine with a lot of torque albeit that is usually a diesel though diesels don't seem to be a good longer term purchase right now. Though I'm not a fan of going too small on the rims either - there is generally a middle-ground for the best compromise.

Not sure what your top budget is but there is a 19 plate Maserati Levante on AT for £40k.

Personal taste and all but something just looks wrong to me about these SUVs which look like a regular car design perched up and engorged. Personally think VW nailed it with the Tiguan and Touareg. (Though I personally lean towards the off-roader/truck looks like the Discovery and older Pathfinder, etc.).

I agree for the most part. I remember someone at work getting an X6 in 2008 and I thought it looked hideous.

Just trying to pull out some more options for the OP that meet his criteria of V6, 300+ BHP and big boot. The Levante didn't review that well, but it matches the stated requirements.

Interesting, thanks!

It's defintely an option I hadn't really thought of so thanks for that. Interesting that they are so cheap, didn't even enter my mind that it would be possible. However think the looks kill it for me, not a big fan of it.

Another suggestion : BMW 6 GT.
They are usually cheaper used than the 5 Touring, due to them being less desirable and they have more rear leg room & boot space. They also come standard with a pano glass roof. Finding one with adaptive cruise might be tricky though.

This is an excellent suggestion. The only thing a 5 Touring does better than a 6GT is look less awkward. Ignoring styling, it is simply a better car and even more suited to long road trips. The standard equipment is better than you'd be able to get even if you tried to find a 5 Series with a load of options.

Another vote for the BMW 6 GT. If you dont mind the looks, a better car all round than the 5 series estate.

Good shout!

Although they are 5m long :eek:

Hell of a lot of car for the money...

That first one will come with ACC wont it since it has the driving assistance plus pack? Or does that not give you ACC on every BMW model?

Thats a well loaded car even comes with a towbar, soft close doors, HUD and TV reception with screens in the back and 4 wheel driving.

I think it may just have jumped to the top of my list. Just wondering whether to risk showing it to my wife before I reserve a car or just do it and seek forgiveness...

Yeah it does have ACC.

Full brochure for it here.

It also has the £3340 Executive Drive option which I think it means the chassis and suspension is from the 7 series???? @[TW]Fox?

The 6 GT is well equipped anyway but the person who bought this specced about £15k of options. I think the only thing they didnt add was the B&W sound system.
Yup both the links had ACC

The 630d was fully loaded! But I called up and it's got a reservation fee on it already. Got them seeing if the person wants it or not

None of them are 'good value - my Dad paid less than that in 2019 for a year old example! But, in the context of everything else I suppose it isn't too bad.

It has Driver Assistant Plus - this is exceptionally rare and includes the adaptive cruise. But it's a 640i xDrive - so all of the discussed pros/cons with the 540i come back into the decision.

If we ignore fuel consumption it is a very nicely specified example and will be a truly outstanding car. Whether you still think that at a petrol station in Europe is something else entirely :D
