Hi guys. I'm selling my mum's old John Lewis washing machine on Gumtree. It's in her flat and I haven't pulled the machine forward yet to take a look but I presume there'll be levers on the copper pipes like mine. I remember capping mine when disconnecting my old one and waiting for delivery of the new one.
I'm wondering if it's enough to disconnect and turn the water levers to cut off the supply or if I need to cap the pipe/pipes? Should I disconnect it before a buyer looks at it, or after it's sold it in case he/she wants to see if it at least switches on?

Lever should be sufficient but it may weep so keep an eye. I wouldn't bother leaving it plumbed in. It's a second hand washer, buyer beware

You'll most likely find a tip somewhat like this to turn off the supply to the machine and undo the pipe.

I would take a video of it working to show buyers perhaps.

Thanks guys, and good idea taking a video.

I'm also seling a bunch of other things from my mum's flat. Everything is advertised as cash and collect only.
I just had a person who said she wanted to buy the Samsung Fridge Freezer. She asked "What's the present condition and why are you selling it? What's the last asking price?"
I presume she meant what will I take. It's on at £150 and I said I'd take £140. She then replied "Send me your PayPal info so I can proceed with the payment".

On the one hand, asking why I'm selling seems like a question from a genuine buyer.
But on the other hand, I got suspicious with the paypal request and told her that if she wants the fridge, she would have to meet me anyway and that it's cash and collect as the ad states. Was I right to be suspicious? There's a page on gumtree about paypal scams, so I suspect my instinct is correct.

Don't sell anything that is 'on collection' using PayPal. At all. Do not at all be tempted.

If they want to pay digitally then once they're at your front door, ask them to do a bank transfer from their phone and watch them clearly do it.

Yeah for stuff like that cash only thanks, you'll also get loads of weird terminology from the unwashed Facebook crowd i'm afraid 'Hi m8 wotz ur bottom price?!'

Our machine only has a cold inlet so only one tap to turn off and unscrew, as has been said it might leak a little so maybe put a bucket/basin under it just to be safe, then pull the waste one off too which is normally connected to the sink drain somewhere (usually a grey ribbed pipe).

Beware anyone from the OCUK MM saying things like "ok its £400 but I dont really want it, impulse buy at £50?" lol.

Guys, I got another enquiry for the fridge freezer. This time genuine. Said her fridge packed up and needs one urgently. Mine (my mum's) is advertised at £150. She said she was hoping to pay £100. I said I can go to £140. She then offered £130 and I said meet me at £135 and it must be cash and collect. She agreed and said she could meet me there and collect today as she's not far away. She also said she will get back to me, she wants to just check her funds. That was about 40 minutes ago so who knows, maybe she found something else. I don't think £135 is unreasonable, do you? I mean I don't want to just give it away. This is the fridge. It was bought new in 2015 I think.

I think you are driving a hard bargain for second hand white goods tbh. Especially a 7 year old fridge freezer.

Most people will be doing the maths that it'll cost you £40 to bin so if you get more than that, you'll be happy.

Also, it's only sold when someone comes with cold hard cash. So keep multiple threads open as 90% will be time wasters.

They’ll also need a van or large estate to collect/get rid.

Old white goods are worth next to nothing and a brand new fridge freezer with next day delivery can be had for not much more than £250, you have to factor that in also.

Paying £100 more for a brand new (albeit different model) from Currys would seem like a no brainer over a used 7 year old one I would have to go and collect myself and then get it into my house and the right place, Id happily pay the extra for the new one that will be delivered and installed.

Thanks guys. You make good points about second hand white goods. Well I went back to her and said I'd accept the £130 she offered. She said "I'm not sure, when I checked my funds I shouldn't be going over a £100 and theres a Smeg fridge freezer available in Hampstead for £110". So I checked Gumtree and yes there is a Smeg in Hampstead, though it's for £120. I went back to her and said I'd seen the Smeg but I'd match the £110 she mentioned. She said "Ok I'm just out doing the school run and call you shortly to discuss. I will have to pick it up in the morning now as my brother is collecting with his van." So, I'll wait and see. She might still get my fridge for £100.

fridges are only expected to last 7-10 years and as others said you have to pay to get rid of them because of the gas.

it's probably going to break on her in the next couple of years so she's really paying whatever +£40 to get rid of it

you should make the buyer aware if it's not transported upright it will need to settle probably over night before she turns it on or the compressor might be running without any fluid and it will break

Household recycling centre (akak the tip) should take them for nothing, you just have to get it there.
ahh yea I keep forgetting it's different for your own waste.

most probably use envirocall or whatever though which is still a £10 for a fridge and anyway the point still stands it has 0-3 years of life left so she's essentially playing Russian roulette,

no way I'd take a year old fridge, mine is about that age now and whilst it still works fine I'm expected it won't last much longer

Don't get set on buyers.

I had so so many time wasters when I was trying to sell a few wardrobes. People offering a tenner for it, to arranging to collect and never turning up. Even had people phoning up for them and then saying not sure they can afford it (Do people not even look at the price).

You try and do the decent honest thing when someone says they want it by then putting off other prospective buyers, and it then comes back to bite you.

Best advice is to just say first come first served. If people honestly want it then they'll come for it.

Oh as it's a big item, even though you've put cash on collection you'll still get people asking if you can deliver. Gumtree is an absolute cesspit of morons these days.

Yep, very true. Well, currently she says she still wants it at £110, can't collect just yet but will maybe call me tomorrow and she said she hopes it'll still be available. I had someone else last night time asking to pick it up today for £70 cash. I told him I'm waiting to hear back from the £110 buyer.

He then increased to £80 saying he'll be selling it on and will only get £90 if he's lucky. I told him I realise he might find something else but I'd message him anyway if no go with the other buyer and he was cool with that. In other gumtree news, I sold the bed for the asking price and that's been collected, and sold a pair of sofas for near the asking price and they've been collected. So that's good. Regarding the washing machine, I can't move it forward even a millimetre, very odd, feels like it's been welded in.

Dude just sell it to the guy for £80 before you end up with an offer for -£40.
