Can do either method
If you have a usb to sata cable
You can directly clone to another hard drive/ssd
If not I would image rather than clone
So image stored on usb ,external drive etc
Put ssd in then restore the image
You can try to clone to usb then put ssd in
And clone the usb to it
It will just depend on your particular hardware if that way works
Obviously which ever method you use
Don't format the original hard drive
Until you know you've been successful

The only issue I'm having is the laptop is so slow I don't know how many hours ours it could take.

Been a long time since I used mechanical drives
But yeah it could take an hour or so
If you have no important data on there
You could just remove the hard drive
Put the SSD in
And clean install windows
That sounds the faster option though isn't always
Windows installs quickly
It's all the updates, software installation etc
That can take most of the time
Other options include dual hard drive dock
There are ones you put the drives in
Push a button to clone with no need to use software
Though those aren't a free solution
And will still take same time anyway
But they're useful for a no involvement clone
No need to know how to use software
