Best CPU value/return for an AB350 gaming 3 motherboard?

Hi all,

Have a Ryzen 1700X in my AB350 gaming 3 motherboard, just wondering how CPUs have come along since this and what would be a recommended upgraded CPU for my motherboard?

Basically the CPU fan is sounding like it's on the way out, so figured if I'm going to replace that, I might as well check regarding the CPU.

Not really sure how much faster recent CPUs are to the Ryzen 1700X or if they've plateaued a bit?

You again? :D

Hoping that the Gaming 3 gets an official Ryzen 5xxx BIOS soon, which would allow a drop in upgrade to a 5800X/X3D or 5900X if you want to push the poor VRM a bit.

Have you any need for more performance, is something holding you back?

Looks like the Ryzen 9 3950X 16C/32T is th best cpu for this mobo at the moment.

I have a 3600 running on this mobo and its doing well with a pure rock pro 2

Heheh, you're helping me left right and centre today!

Ah that's exactly what I was looking for - yes might hold out then and see what bios upgrades arrive.

I do lots of programming, 3d graphics and the like which love to kill the CPU/RAM, so certainly use it, but not dying in a ditch at the moment over it. More I've had this cycle before where I replace the CPU fan, then realise I want to upgrade the CPU, then realise the fan isn't compatible etc. Then I realise the motherboard is the bottleneck and I need to upgrade that and before I know it, I've got a whole pc arriving from OCUK.... :D

Will keep any eye on bios updates and use that as my upgrade point!

Well at least you make good use of all that RAM!.

Yeah I wouldn't wait too long, but I tend to do lots of upgrades for people so I'll @ you if I see something sooner rather than later. It's 100% worth trying to eeek it out until the end of the year for Zen4 if nothing comes along on the 5xxx series BIOS, as you'll be on a whole new board/CPU (& socket) RAM, cooler etc. which is a more sensible move than spending on a 3900X (too much) or similar IMO, of course. If you could get a 3900X at ~£200 then that would be a great deal though, do you have MM access?

Ah good advice, yes it's sometimes hard to judge the right moment. Sorry what's MM? Is this the mysterious member's thing?

Yeah the Members Market, you have an old account, but wasn't sure if you signed up for in the past before the rules changed? I think you need 1000 posts now, but as long as you keep having problems you'll hit that in no time.

Ah yes, I think I probably was, but didn't ask for membership - I feel I should have automatic access as I designed the OCUK logos and branding..... :D

But I'll keep breaking things in the meantime!
