Big estate/SUV - opinions please!

I'm so sorry :(
As much as the F pace is nice to drive the interior just isnt a patch on Mercedes or BMW. I know which car I would want to do long distances in and the F Pace isnt one. :(
Commiserations

Fair comments lads. I think if it was purely down to me I would have taken the 6 GT. However it's a family decision at the end of the day and after the 6GT debacle we ended up with more of a 'you choose the model and I'll pick the engine' kind of deal.

Here's my rationalisation (doesn't mean it's 100% undisputably the right decision just a way to justify it to myself)

Interior - Jag is full leather with heated and cooled front seats, heated rears and 4 zone climate control, so does have some advantages. Merc was 1/2 Artico 1/2 alcantara. BMW all the cars on the shortlist were the dakota leather - Nappa comfort seats would have been amazing but rare as hens teeth. The 6GT that had it yesterday with all the options was sold, that car would almost have been worth risking a ****** off spouse to get as I'm sure it would have won her round in the end with all the creature comforts.

Refinement - can't argue here, I think the BMW and Mercedes will be better. F Pace is hardly a Peugeot 107 though in terms of NVH.
Infotainment - The Jag system is vastly inferior to iDrive no doubt. However the Jag gets full screen Carplay with a touchscreen which is 'good enough'.
Options - the Merc although Premium Plus spec, didn't have adaptive cruise, after the 6 GT was ruled out there wasn't a 5 Touring we could see with it either (the only one with it in our price range didn't have a reversing cam), this F Pace does. Plus sliding pano roof, 360 camera, surround sound speaker upgrade were all nice to have.
Parking - 4.7m plays 4.9m. Not the main consieration at all but hopefully a nice bonus.
Warranty - Jag had a 2 year warranty offer on this car which helps alleviate reliability worries, and I'll defintiely not keep it beyond the 2 years

X3 was definitely considered btw, I really like it but ultimately boot was a little smaller and not much of an upgrade over a 3 series touring, and wife didn't like the grille. GLC the dash/stick on iPad and crabbing issues put me off.

Assuming you have an F31 3 Series touring it is a complete and total upgrade over a 3 Series touring. Probably more so than the F Pace, given how good the rest of the car is. It's a totally new platform.

Agree about the GLC mind - it's quite an old car now (It's based on the 2014 C Class) and it shows.

The boot, the boot. Not the whole car.

I fully agree the X3 is brilliant and a totally different generation to the F30/31 hence I really like it

Good choice, if you like it but want a decent interior next time there is always the 21MY facelift.

Last path into a supercharged car aswell, cant dismiss that.

Last supercharged car I had was a decently modded R53 Mini Cooper S and it was pretty fun to rag around and make it whine but I imagine this will be a little more grown up...

The facelift one looks nice and the seats and infotainment in particular look like a huge improvement but way too pricey right now

I really liked the F Pace when I considered it as an upgrade for the XE 25t; but you could really feel the weight and it was a bit wallowy. A really unfair comparison given how nimble the XE was though.

Can't deny it has nice road presence though (for the family decision aspect) and it sounds like you have one with the right options - I couldn't find a 360 camera one when I was looking pre-pandemic.

Well... I've just done a madness

Showed the 6GT to my wife and it got a flat no because she doesn't like the look :(

So after a chat with her I went and put a deposit on a V6 Supercharged petrol F Pace instead of a diesel one. Also been told after having 3 cars in 2021 that I have to stick with this for 2 years. If I make a new thread within that time it'll be because she's divorced me for constantly changing cars :D

Thanks for the help all and sorry I didn't get a BMW :p
Oooof this didn’t go well.

Drove 100 miles to pick up the car today but it was an absolute disaster.

Seats were pretty unclean, there was a dodgy sticky substance and some old coins in the centre console storage, the battery storage well under the boot had a brown liquid inside it and the bolts holding the battery into the bodywork was all rusty and corroded. Plus some bodywork damage that should have been fixed already.

Jaguar Approved my arse

Back to the start I guess!

Tbh I can vouch for that.

I googled my old XF reg the other day and the Jaguar approved video popped up (from when it was resold) where you can literally see the dent in the bonnet that I did.

hope you billed them for the petrol to travel, and the Happy meal.
Should have done, was just happy to get my deposit back I didn’t think of that

:o

The other thing I realised on my 200 mile round trip on my own with no passengers and quite a few roundabouts on the route is that a straight 6 petrol really is a sweet thing to drive :D

Underrated comment.
I've got a 3.0 petrol six in the Q7 (albeit a V) and it's so much better than a diesel; even a six. It’s easy to forget if you haven’t had one for a while.
You know you want to; one last hurrah and all that ;)

Shame they can't make some kind of ultra fuel efficient/eco friendly 6 cylinders :( I dislike driving anything else.

Spoiler alert, it’s not a straight 6…
I said I have a V. Point still stands. Is it as sonorous as my old M54, no. Still better than a 4-cyl hybrid they use elsewhere in the VAG range (and indeed x30e at BMW).

Or are you referring to the JLR?

This one has batteries in the boot which means I’ve done 500 miles so far and still have 40% left in the 80-litre fuel tank. Could be worse for a barge weighing 2500kg.

Wouldn't say no to a hybrid - 500 miles is about what I get out of an 80L tank give or take on a reasonable run.

yes I was referring the 200 mile return of the J
