are you stressed and over worked?

I fear a reckoning is coming for the rich and powerful. People are sick of struggling to get by, working silly hours for not enough pay while their bosses get paid ridiculous sums and they worry if they are going to be able to pay their bills every month.

People might finally be waking up to the reality that working your ass off doesn't guarantee a good life and is more likely to just end with a miserable existence where you will look back and wish you could have worked less and spent more time doing what you actually enjoy.

This.

The money people expect for sitting at the top is ridiculous.

Also, what people get paid in different sectors is also very broken and is leading/will lead to a lot of problems in the future.

Work is never usually worth the stress. Unless your names Jeff and space travel is a hobby, you really shouldn't be losing sleep over your job no matter how much you care about it and your colleagues. There's other jobs and loyalty counts for little. Most people in IT/tech seem to work somewhere for 18 months then move on.

You'll be surprised how much you can slow yourself down and how little impact that actually has sometimes. Keep superiors in the know with the struggles and when things don't go to plan you can say you didn't get the support you needed. You can't take everything on and win every time, sometimes action only happens when there's a big enough complaint from those paying the bills!

Our workload has definitely increased since the start of the pandemic, although it's still manageable and I can mostly switch off after work etc. There's another department though that has insanely high turnover now and they've announced a complete shift in mentality to try and reduce stress and give them a better work/life balance. I've heard one or two similar stories about people leaving for a 10k payrise.

Oh I wish this was the case, I've earned less over the past 2 years than I have in my life.

I run a small business (sub 15 staff now). Despite being in the right place over covid with our software and services it has been horrendous.

Staff leaving for larger multinationals that can offer more, projects being scoped as part of grant applications resulting in fixed costs that are unmanageable, customers being too busy to sign off work or upgrades, a surge in low cost competition in our sector.. List goes on.

My goal is always to protect the staff and their sanity at all costs though which is perhaps why I take on more burden than I should.

I had to sell my sell my house and put investments/savings into the business so I know exactly where the OP is coming from.

Having corrected operational issues, I'm still about 3-6 months away from being out the woods.

I won't go into too much detail, but in short yes, I've recently been suffering as a result of stress at work. Over the past couple of years I've been taking on more and more responsibilities, more out of necessity than choice, but its got to the stage where I often find myself not enjoying the weekend because I'm worrying about what waits for me on Monday morning. I didnt enjoy my Christmas becuase I spent the whole time worrying about work, in particular projects that were given absolute hard stop deadlines in mid January.

It got to the point that in a recent one-to-one Teams meeting with my boss, while trying to explain some of the issues i was having trouble with, I basically broke down in tears and had to leave. I find that somewhat embarrassing to admit, but it's made me realise that just trying to knuckle down and do as much work as I can is not healthy. I just ended up feeling completely overwhelmed by work.

I've been in IT hardware maintenance for over 30 years and i've met a lot of customers on my travels who are paid a lot more than me (sometimes double) but have a lot more responsibilities and the stress that goes with it.

I'd recommend talking to your GP to see what assistance they can provide, what with Covid etc they may prescribe a low dosage anti-anxiety drug to help your sleep disturbance. I'm personally taking a low
dosage pill to help my sleep and it does not affect me the next day. I've worked all through Covid going to places such as hospital DC's and that was stressful.

Personally speaking, IT hardware maintenance has always been the lowest paid job comparatively speaking so i've had to accept that fact but my job is a lot less stressful than most. I leave home around 9am
and get back home most days around 3 to 4pm.

Nothing embarassing about that at all. Embarassing for your boss if it's got that far, but not for you.

Couple of sayings I've heard here over the years

"If you want something doing well, give it to a busy man"
"Doesn't mater how hard you work, it's never enough"

I agree but I'm sorry to say people in this country will bitch and moan about it, do nothing and still bend over, look at the rising energy prices due soon.

Our company has support with stress/mental health etc and part reason why workers would need support is due to this cut back everything/race to the bottom culture as the complany makes more than enough money. It just wants to make more than enough money and then some more.

That's disgusting that it got that far and you're living your life like that. No-one should be under that much pressure at work. Do you have activities outside of work, or do you just spend your free time worrying about work?

Very similar to my situation, and dare I say it, a lot of others. I do wonder if good workers are taken advantage of, as I guess it's easier to pile on work to those able to do it, rather than address those who can't/won't.

It absolutely is. It is best not to be efficient, as it just means you end up doing the same work as someone getting paid the same as you, but working much slower.

It absolutely happens, but most people who are competent and know their worth will simply go elsewhere or even be headhunted. It's a poor strategy long-term as it's essentially a race to the bottom, particularly in today's job market, which heavily favours employees.

This is how the world works. As a company your job is to squeeze every last penny out of your customers and give as little of that as possible to your staff. The thing that I absolutely hate the most is all these companies that do mental health, equality, diversity etc and advertise it but won't actually treat their staff with anything but contempt.

This is exactly how it works. Some jobs are stressful and there is no way around it. But more and more, people who are mentally resilient are just taken advantage of and other people take the ****. My partner who works quite high up in the NHS has endless problems with this. The hard workers and good staff are taken advantage of because they don't kick up a fuss and its so hard to get rid of the ones who take the ****.

We have a friend who managed to basically take over a year off during COVID due to her maternity leave and being "at risk" if she went into the hospital so she just did nothing at all for full pay. She obviously accumulated full holiday while not working for that year so she now has something like 65 days of leave for this year. Shes just got pregnant again and will milk this for as much as its worth as well.
