Hi All

I'm experiencing something very strange with this PC I have purchased, refurbished.

I have installed a fresh copy of windows 7 pro on this and activated it, as it came with a product key. All sorted.

However, it seems like even despite the clean install of windows, a lot of things seem to be blocked.

I can't run windows update, i just get an error code, which when googled, relates to a break in connection to the server.

I managed to install google chrome, but then anything i download from the internet via chrome (drivers and whatnot) seem to be blocked automatically and most websites i try to go on some up with security errors first, and i have to click proceed to continue

Even getting onto Rufus website to download the tool to create a bootable USB was blocked, as was downloading .NET framework from Microsoft themselves!

Never seen anything like this before in the hundreds of installs of windows and google chrome.

Does anyone have any ideas why this system seems so "locked down?"

I have put my own SSD in, clean install of genuine windows 7 pro. I was going to use this as my plex server, but its turning into a nightmare.

Thank you
James

I suppose the first question is why on earth are you using windows 7 on a fresh install? Its antiquated by todays standard and no longer receives security updates / support etc. I'd wager all your problems would go away with windows 10.

If you must use Windows 7 is the computers time / date set correctly? If its out you will get security certificate errors on everything as the certificate wont verify correctly.

I'm using windows 7 because it came with a genuine copy and cd key. It's only for a Plex server so not that fussed.

Yes date and time all correct. Never seen anything like it especially on Chrome. Get security warnings on every website but again it's only used as a Plex server so only wanted to download drivers etc but had to leave it!

Security warnings are because Windows 7 is not a recognised OS anymore in as much as to say its not "safe" to use as far as websites are concerned. Its EOL years ago so you will get warnings all over the place on various websites. Also Windows update on Windows 7 has not worked for many years so you will not get any updates. You will probably get the same thing if you used Windows XP.

If you want drivers you would be better off using a Win 10 machine going onto the Lenovo M93 support page downloading all the drivers, then copy to USB and install on the M93.

Either do upgrade install to W10 then a clean install of W10 or just clean install of w10 and w7 key should activate it...genuine w10 either way :)

There has been a problem with w7 updates on fresh install for ages now...not every install but a lot of them...I have a couple of small programs from MS that fix the problem
