I'm sorry I thought Biden said Russia can't use major currencies but I must have misinterpreted that.

Biden can't unilaterally do that, if Germany wants to send Russia EUR they can still do that. Some European countries are being rather weak right now re: sanctions.

Why is germany against blocking swift?
They need to be able to buy Russian gas so they don't have Germans freezing to death. That would play worse with voters than not sanctioning Russia as hard as everyone else wants would.

I'm actually surprised Boris is behind the idea given that the knock on price increases to gas/electric in the UK will probably be the final nail in the coffin of his re-election hopes.

On a probability scale this is the least likely option that a person would take.

Why. There are no shortage of videos out there that people make in times of great stress. Some people live on their phones now. She might hope this message is seen by family members. She is likely in shock, doesn't know what to do, making a video is doing something rather than just sitting their terrified.

Obviously not, but he can easily be angered into a miscalculation if it seems like his plans are falling apart and the vipers in the Kremlin/Oligarchs see weakness.

Turning half of Europe radioactive is not a 'miscalculation' he's going to get pressured into by oligarchs.

The "feeling" im getting from all this is despite Russia getting first mover advantage and making some quick inroads through the less defended areas, once they hit the Ukrainian organized units they're getting mullered.

Officially its only (sadly) 57 Ukrainian deaths so far, yet we know Russia has lost a couple of planes, a number of helicopters, several tanks and lost several support platforms and units. That kind of attrition rate doesnt work well for Putin.

Last few minutes seems to have confirmed a large explosion from the area and Ukraine claiming theyve re-taken it. Im guessing they probably blew up whatever building the Russians were pushed back to for cover.

Now seems 100% confirmed, a huge strategic loss for Russia, not to mention the loss of one of their Elite Units that were holding it.

Again another major attrition loss for Russia.

I didn't intend for that to be the meaning of the post, I meant that if looked like the losses are worse than what was shared with his allies then they might be incentivised into pushing him out and Putin knowing that risk might do something ridiculous in an attempt to keep up the image of success.

Not necessarily as ridiculous as blowing up Chernobyl, but in general.

Yeah but gas and oil are less than 20% of German energy needs.

I do hope so, if the Ukrainians do fight back Putin could get a bloody nose, it's a massive country.

Easily confused given the thread of that conversation started off with the idea he'll cause a deliberate 'accident' at Chernobyl to irradiate us all :p

Apparently thinking that's probably not his plan, is me crediting him with too much intelligence.

It is amusing how Russia invaded Ukraine early this morning, and the DOW is about to finish the day in the green after all. Lol.

Me too. Perhaps in hindsight, NATO should have brought Ukraine into the fold and just told Putin to go do one.

In fact, maybe they should have just gobbled up as many countries as they could in its inception, rather than a gradual expansion.
At inception , all of these eastern European countries were part of the Warsaw pact
