There must be a bigger picture, the fact Belarus are with them on this (or at least we assume they are, it may have been a "help us conquer them or we conquer YOU first" kind of deal) indicates he hopes to get a mini USSR on the go.

Isn't there something about this:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kievan_Rus

AFAIK,he has made references to it.

There is 2 possibilities here and neither of them good - either Putin is no longer acting with the same rationale - call him crazy or whatever, or he is and we aren't seeing the bigger picture here.

I can't really believe the way they are approaching things in Ukraine is intentional for some kind of bigger play though.

It almost feels like he's trying to bait the West into conflict but for what end and he could do this without such terrible mistakes militarily making his armed forces weaker ? It would also put an interesting spin on the Intel the West has been gathering, maybe they got it, because he wanted them to have it ?

Or maybe we seriously overestimated Russian military

Rivet Joint and Combat Sent heading up through Greece - interesting.

EDIT: Combat Sent still on the ground actually - but maybe heading same direction.

I think as smart as he is, he thought he could just take Ukraine and no one would really do anything. I think as slow as it is, he didn't expect the the undermining he is getting now or beginning to get.

Sorry to say it's factual, not nonsense, Europe have been too busy being politically correct, instead of financing their own defence, to the current advantage of those that laugh at such liberal tripe.

Why do you claim this is nonsense?

Same goes for them not being way further ahead with being energy independent. Their management of not building green solutions and battery storage is pitiful. But they seem to have time on their hands to lecture everyone on how things should be done. They are most certainly not the defacto standard on many things.

Well from a strategic POV Russia isn't their only concern, there is no assurance that the US won't become belligerent towards it's allies in the future.

From a much more basic position it's just a consequence of globalism.

Now that Russia has shown it's hand it has become impossible to justify these policies which owing to public pressure (which I hope is not deterred by petty wants) I think it will change because the risk of not doing so is now no longer questionable, it is rolling across a democratic country with the purpose of subjugation and terror.

I'm seriously thinking that NATO should actively demolish whatever part of Nord Stream 2 is in NATO controlled area with explosives.

Very surreal to be able to watch the capital, and hearing the gunshots and distant explosions going off

Whilst morbid, it could serve as a check against war crimes as well as the resultant misinformation about it and as such I hope there's plenty of battery/generator powered cameras around the place in addition to the immense surveillance NATO is doing.

I have no idea what is going on, there are efforts to strengthen NATO's eastern borders and exercises planned in Romania, etc. but the sheer scale of air refuelling operations tonight would support the movement of massive amounts of combat air power :s dunno if just sabre rattling or whether the US is actually thinking of calling Putin's bluff.

Combined with that the RQ-4s focussing heavily on Sochi tonight.

Personally I'm concerned if Ukraine pee off putin he might do something really really stupid.

If he's lost the plot anything goes

Well with Russian soldiers now at risk any attack sufficient enough to disable Kyiv's defence would be obvious if they started to bunker down/retreat and I would hope that the generals currently surrounding Putin would find it very difficult ordering that sort of attack on their own men on purpose.

There's been a rather cryptic tweet from US Senator Marco Rubio suggesting something is off with Putin and he wishes he could say more.

There's definitely something we aren't being told here or a significant unknown.
