He'll be loosing support at home an abroad if he goes down that route though.

He told the Russian people and international community that they were going in to stop the genocide and denazify (lol) Ukraine.

Indiscriminate shelling and killing of the very civilians they supposedely went in to liberate won't go down well at all I'd assume.

The whole exercise just seems very confused and disorganised to be honest.

I do worry that Russia have just sent in conscripts and old hardware to test Ukraine's defences. Western intelligence would know if their military was far weaker than they claim. I have no doubt it's far inferior to NATO, but Ukraine alone can't stand against it.

Fighting a defensive war with newer and equivalent equipment with soldiers trained by NATO allies in their own country? Honestly man, good luck to Russia. I wouldn't want the British Army sent to capture a city in Ukraine.

Not sure what this means ? They're going to take the gloves when it comes to Artillery and their usual doctrine of that usage ? It seems although there has been many issues in terms of fighting will, supplies, the military has been tied politically where it comes to preserving as much of Ukraine as possible, does this mean they can now go to normal doctrine ?

Maybe they just cared less about destroying infrastructure/killing civilians in Syria.

I suspect though that whilst Russia likes to portray that it has a modern military with high tech equipment, the reality is that their good stuff is in short supply and the vast majority of their forces are still using soviet era equipment.

Edit: So Ukraine are reporting that Russia's losses so far are:
  • 14 aircraft (13 attackers (SU-25 and other CAS) and 1 IL-76)
  • 8 helicopters
  • 102 tanks
  • 536 armored cars and APCs
  • 15 artillery pieces
  • 1 Buk air defense system
  • 3500 soldiers (dead, captured, wounded)
I expect Ukraine are inflating the numbers for morale but honestly even half or a third of that in 48 hours is surely a massive blow. I wonder what Ukraines real losses are thus far, I saw on BBC that a military hospital in the east has all 400 beds filled with wounded, grim.

Maybe but even the confirmed losses are a huge blow and there are supposedly 2 IL-76 transport planes shot down by now, that a massive loss of life in one go for Russian troops.

No way Putin nukes Ukraine. He and Russia would be pariahs. Even their closest friends would have to ditch them. I would imagine the Russian public would rise up, he'd be fighting a war at home.

I second this, I'm extremely doubtful that the oligarchs wouldn't pull him out of power prior to this.

He doesn't need to use nukes though, they have devastating non-nuclear bombs (Father of All Bombs for example).

I don't see how you can use them in civilian areas though without it all kicking off...
