So do we have the facility to shoot down/take out nuclear arms that make their way towards UK soil, if such an event were to happen?

Not all 6000 of them, I'm no expert - but one would probably hit. Doubt the UK would be the biggest target anyway, not that it will ever happen mind you.

It seems you either misread or misunderstood the second bullet point, as you're saying what it does.

  • If they launched nuclear missiles at NATO targets in Europe it would be picked up but would hit before a counterattack could be launched, in which case a response would be launched by the non-European NATO members and whatever is left of European NATO members.

It quite clearly suggests it is possible the UK could not react in time. There is no time limit. It is irrelevant. The nuclear deterrent works because a counterstrike is always possible with near 100% certainty. It also doesn't rely on other NATO members.

MAD requires that to be the case.

I took "raising the readiness level" to mean he's increasing the Russian equivalent of the Defcon Level.. Was there a DEFCON equivalent in the Soviet Union? : AskHistorians (reddit.com)

" If an enemy attack appeared imminent, Soviet forces could be raised to a state of utmost readiness as rapidly as possible by declaring a combat alert (boyevaya trevoga)...For the strategic nuclear forces, the notification by alert (opoveshcheniye po trevoge) brought them to full combat readiness in "only some minutes."

...The alert command that brought nuclear weapons and their operators to the brink of war was known to them as a preliminary (or sometimes a prepare) command (predavaritel'naya komanda).

It looks as if, within days, the "major concerns" emanating from so many sources about the alledged parties in Downing Street and the fear of the Chinese virus having been only politically put to bed have vaporised, so every cloud has a silver lining.

However it's now a pity the concerns have mutated to whether we will we be vaporised in our beds tonight... ;) Perhaps my reluctance to start the lawn mowing saga as early February will be irrelevant, and Greta's concerns about global warming brought to a whole new, but very short climax!

I'm betting there is some very busy motions in place for our royal family, government, the American president etc at the moment.

A lot of wheels will be turning, just in case scenario

Not so far as I am aware.

There has been talk about using the PAAMS system on the Type 45 destroyers for ABM defence but to my knowledge it hasn't been upgraded yet.

As far as I know we rely on deterrence via Trident instead.

I’m in an interesting position. If dropped on the centre of London, I’d be right on the edge of the outermost greyish ring on nukemap. Forget what that bit is now.

Maybe, but probably not.

Incoming ICBMs can be intercepted (as you would expect if anti-satellite missiles are also a thing) but it's not easy and I am unsure what our capability for it is, especially as the UK no longer has any dedicated interceptor aircraft so would be probably be relying entirely on ship/land based missiles for such a job.

An added difficulty is that some of Russia's ICBMs are MIRVs (imagine a cluster bomb and a nuclear missile had a baby).
