The light touch that Ukraine wasn't in NATO.

Now it doesn't matter because Ukraine is becoming a fortress, it won't even need to join it at this rate.

I was thinking that myself.

Surely if Putin fails (and I think he will) the west are going to be providing the best hardware, training and support for the Ukraine in the aftermath of this.

I’m wondering when the dust settles, if this will end up to be one of the biggest military blunders in recent history.

Well it’s not entirely the action of senile, mentally deranged person is it. Even we carpet bombed indiscriminately during WW2, the Yanks used agent orange in Vietnam.

Implying nuclear attacks while invading another country is definitely on the scale of derangement.

When we were obliged to send ships for the Falklands war at least one had to be sent while still carrying nuclear weapons and they had to be secretly offloaded and brought home. Even for the Falklands which strongly identifies as British it was unacceptable to even imply the involvement of nuclear weapons.

I hope they find some common ground in the talks today but I don't think it likely.
It will probably be:

Ukraine - Russia to leave Ukraine immediately and pay for the damage they caused.
Russia - Ukraine to surrender immediately and their government to resign.

I can't see any middle ground there.

Neither can I.
There is no "deal" only demands.

From Ukraine perspective even going back a week is still a massive net loss for them, (lives infrastructure etc)
From Russias perspective even going back a week is going to look embarrassing.

I guess this is why it's hard to see this deescalting. Longer it goes on the harder it will be to find peace.

I can't see putin ever agreeing to go been to before this started.

Russia withdraws and Ukraine does not become part of NATO, they will probably want Zelensky to resign.

I still feel Ukraine should have agreed to never join. As much as I hate bullying. If it did avoid the war then surely everyone is a winner?

This is the alternative. And we would have found out if Russia was genuine in that demand.

What is a light touch?

the rest of your post is just a poor attempt at baiting.

Not interested in baiting you. It's my opinion.

I'll not attempt to debate with you as others appear to have attempted without success.

You are free to have your opinion. I just hope you appreciate that freedom.

Nato would be the only thing stopping Russia from attempting this again, they have no qualms about tearing up treaties they've signed in the past.

Well since this attempt hasn't finished I guess it will continue and we all get to see how it plays out...lots of people get to die in the meantime.

Where do you stop though? Putin is bonkers and living in the past. He effectively wants to bring back the ussr

Derangement would be to launch first and warn later. He’s not deranged I know people think they know how he thinks and what he’s planning and all the rest of it, but they don’t. We have seen in this thread people are just carpet bombing opinions and snippets of media hoping some of it hits.

It’s a warning to back it up as someone said you need to give them a way to back out, because if you really believe he’s deranged then your acting very stupidly.

I think Russia will be quite insistent that Ukraine "de-militarise" as well; something I don't believe they will do

I don’t personally think Russia has that much leverage at the table as things stand.

As we speak their entire country is being ostracised by the rest of the world, geographically, financially and morally.

Ukraine should be free to make whatever choices they wish in terms of organisational membership. If they wanted to rejoin Russia, so be it. If they want to join NATO, so be it. They're a sovereign country and their direction is their own.
Russia can not dictate the actions of others.

Considering the speed of this thread, I have not been able to check all 16,000+ posts so please excuse if already posted.

Liveuamap is providing a view of incidents on a regional map.

Task & Purposes (YouTube channel) view of the situation also seems to make a lot of sense with regards to advance speed of the Russian forces and equipment levels.

It is also interesting there is a lot of pro Russia support on Chinas Tic Tok pushed to the top by the CCP. I guess if they push against it then it would dent their claims on Taiwan quite heavily.

Some Chinese companies are bucking the trend (and being allowed to) by blocking some funding access for Russia. Seems to be down to fear of sanctions though. Even the Bank of China regional operation here in Singapore is blocking Russian funding for oil. Feels a bit minimal effort but something is usually better than nothing at all .... unless it is just words with no action to appease the locals.

Surprised there isn't a sticky with some links for this thread. Any decent ones worth taking a look at ?.

You stop there. If Russia does then carry on. Effectively that deal is torn up and you know treaties are worth nothing (probably know that anyway).
Might by some time for him to die.

If it could have avoided bloodshed surely it's worth a go.

However I do not agree with de militarising bordering nato countries.

Maybe, just maybe it would have allowed putin the win he so desperately craves.

It probably wouldn't have worked. But I feel. It was worth a try.
