why does'nt Russia just join NATO?
there's been a few times in the last twenty or so years where i can remember
him kinda flippantly? but also kinda serious? asking, "can Russia join NATO?"
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2...-wanted-to-join-alliance-early-on-in-his-rule
Ukraine isn't in nato. If one NATO country is attacked the we all fight it is the founding principal. They would also be destroyed if the world sent their military into the Ukraine to fight the Russians. But we don't because Putin has is claiming not to care if he gets "destroyed". (He says he's willing to launch nukes)
We can't have it both ways. If we won't commit our own troops to help Ukraine because Putin is crazy and willing to end the world, then we can't pretend he will be deterred by....well...anything.
Likewise, if we boldly proclaim that he won't attack NATO because he is afraid of our military might, why aren't we using that might to help the Ukrainians?
Is Putin afraid of us or not?
It's he takes the Ukraine and manages to recover rebuild the might be he's next stepHe never said that, some reporters asked him when he thinks Putin will stop and he told them he didn't Putin would be satisfied until he'd pushed NATO back to Berlin. That doesn't mean he believes Putin will or even could do it.
why does'nt Russia just join NATO?
Assume this has already been posted, and wasn't going to post, but in case you've not seen it, this thread from a couple of days ago is an interesting read...
Exactly.Join the organisation that was created to defend against you? Interesting. I'd like to think that maybe he was more reasonable back then but with everything he has done over the years he probably only wanted to join to try and break it apart from within.
no one will deny anything about the Russian army anyway, people out right believe Ukraine has no nazi army unit and it's just putin gone mad.
obviously only a fool would believe that's his reason to invade, but it doesn't mean what he says about the nazis isn't true.
Not sure moves this like are sensible the West are supposed to be bastions of freedom and speech, banning this just plays into the hypocritical narrative Putin and the Kremlin love to push about the West. Surely we should be able to make our own minds up what is propaganda and what is not ? Like banning racism, it doesn't actually address the issue, it just tries to hide it instead
The Azov battalion began as a volunteer group that fought alongside the Ukrainian Army against Russia backed insurgents and Russian mercenaries in the East. It was not founded or organised by the Ukrainian government and President Zelenskyy (who is Jewish and a native Russian speaker that wants to unify all groups in Ukraine) has been removing neo-Nazis from government posts.
If we were in a life-and-death struggle with Russia then I strongly suspect that our far right types would set up their own force to fight Russia too. In September 2014, the Azov battalion was expanded into a regiment and enrolled into the National Guard of Ukraine, simultaneously, the unit worked to de-politicize itself and its far right leadership stepped down.
