Only company wanting to build nuclear in the UK is EDF - all the rest pulled out so the projects got cancelled. Give it 5 years and the uk will have 3 nuclear power stations left working (Hinkney Point B, Heysham 1 and Hartlepool all due to close before 2025)

Example of short-sighted approach to energy security was the Brown/Labour sell-off of native nuclear energy capability in the late noughties.

'The evacuation of civilians from the southern city of Mariupol has been postponed, according to the Mariupol city council.

It says this is due to "the fact that the Russian side does not adhere to the regime of silence and continued shelling of both Mariupol itself" and the surrounding area.

Local authorities are asking people to disperse and find places of shelter.

It adds that negotiations are underway to establish a ceasefire and ensure the safe humanitarian corridor, which had been agreed until 4pm local time (2pm GMT).

The Mariupol city council says more information will be provided shortly.

It is understood that, despite the agreed temporary ceasefire, shelling has continued in Mariupol and near the city of Orikhiv.'

Ah yes, caring about treatment of POW's is being "on the wrong side of History", gotcha! I mean it's never a red flag when someone suggests that we need to do something morally and ethically wrong to avoid being "on the wrong side of history", such as

where you are advocating that people involved in POW handling should break the GC but thankfully you will NEVER, EVER be in a situation involving contact with POW's (luckily for them) so personal your opinion means nothing, I'm just glad that our Armed Forces are specifically trained to follow the rules of war unlike yourself who would apparently be happy to abuse POW's whilst spouting that if we don't we'd be on the wrong side of history!

Photographing someone, showing who they are and what they are is not a breach of the Geneva convention, it also isn't morally or ethically wrong. It's a photograph, showing the truth. You're trying to suggest any type of photograph of a POW (which many of these people aren't) is against the Geneva Convention. That's not true.

You carry on caring more about the invaders not being photographed and I'll care more about the thousands of innocent people who will be and are getting killed. It's just a bizarre, and frankly distateful argument to make. I'm going to misquote you, but this is basically your argument - "Oh these Ukrainian soldiers are really bad, they take PHOTOGRAPHS of enemy combatants. We should all condemn them for that. PHOTOGRAPHS! OF PEOPLE TRYING TO KILL THEIR PEOPLE. HOW EVIL THESE UKRAINIAN SOLDIERS ARE."

I should add, that there are absolutely things that are contained within the Geneva Convention that if the defender side were doing then they should be called out for it. Taking some photographs of the invaders is not one of them.

I can't imagine what it must be like for those poor people.
They should get the civilians not willing to fight out of Kyiv while they still have a chance.

British Energy was created as a private company for Nuclear Power in 1995 under John Major, and privatised in 1996 CHRONOLOGY-British Energy in bid talks | Reuters . WHislr running into financial difficulty (which could have shut down all nuclear power stations) the government becamse creditor for the privatised company , until it sold some of its liabilities in 2007 and EDF taking over the rest in 2009 - the government actually made nearly double its investment from the sale.

Sorry to break it to you but fossil fuels are going no where in the short to mid term.
We need to lean into fracking or coal until with have new nuclear or fusion reactors.
We really don’t need to lean on fracking. Lookup dale vince from ecotrocity. Interesting bloke.

It's someone getting killed so I doubt it.
Unlucky ehh, I feel absolutely sorry for the conscripts that have been lied to when getting deployed to Ukraine by commanders, I have absolutely no sympathy for trained Russian pilots, who know exactly why they are there and what they are doing.

No I don't have much sympathy either tbh.

Just listened to an excerpt from a us Military political analyst saying how we will soon be needing Russia in the fight between "everyone" and China.... Come 50 years or less....
Better not do too much damage.

Defeating China is easy: just stop buying their cheap goods and having Western goods made there cheaply.

I said the same thing last week, I feel sorry for the Russian kids he's sent to die. All this death and suffering because he wanted to create a legacy, he wanted to be remembered as the man who restored Russia as a great power. Some Russians might see him as a great man but the rest of the world will remember him as a murderous pathetic little rat, who attacks weaker countries and hides behind his nukes.

Regarding Russian conscripts, I watched a lot of POW videos, a lot of them and none of them had conscripts. They are young guys, the youngest I've seen was 19 and most early 20s. But none say they are conscripts, they all say they are regular forces that signed a contract to join the Russian military (after conscription).

The above does not mean there are no conscripts fighting and it may be the case that very young green recruits were sent to this meatgrinder right out of the bootcamp, which to me is equally evil on the part of Russian generals but so far I have not seen evidence that there are actual conscripts being sent to Ukraine.
