EU law explicitly covers the requirements of a safe country and nowhere in that legal definition does it say the refugee gets to determine it to their whims.

Art. 38 of Directive 2013/32/EU (Recast Asylum Procedures Directive) covers it.

We are not inthe EU anymore if you hadn't noticed.

Have we carried that law over, and made it UK law?

How is it hard to understand.

Get them into this country, if that is where they want to be.

Sort paperwork later.

THE VERY LAST thing anyone fleeing Ukraine now, should be worried about is paperwork and stuff.

Not when food clothes and roof is more important.
There is a process and we would never have an open door policy like that. It was explicitly ruled out as it’s a security risk that others would exploit. They should apply for asylum it would be quickly resolved.

It seems that visas, asylum etc. for UK is all being processed in Poland https://amp.theguardian.com/world/2...e-ukrainians-join-family-in-uk-russia-ukraine

Nothing like an immigration issue to weed out the absolute scum that use this forum. Surprised the owners of ocuk want anything to do with this place.

I agree. I am against purely economic immigration that we see from many countries.

But we know there is an active war/invasion by the Russians to ukraine with Genuine threat of death, rape, etc unless these people leave the country.

It could literally be a fight to the death in ukraine.

So far 1mil have reportedly fled - if this continues many more will; if we and others do not begin moving people away from the border countries, an even bigger catastrophe could occur.

There are also reports of gangs trying to exploit woman - we could prevent some of the chaos if we were proactive.

What concerns do you have with accepting refugees from Ukraine?

What border does France share with Ukraine?

Ukraine hold on, take back land in Crimea and blow the bridge up...

Would be an interesting twist should it happen in the distant future.

I've been saying for a long time that Ukraine should have blown up that bridge. Ignoring its strategic importance, it cost Russia $4bn so that's another financial loss to them should they need to rebuild it in the future.

I’m fine with them coming here, have the correct checks and stuff in place to reduce the risk of problems, but I think we should allow it.

And how do you know they aren't convicted criminals or terrorists? How do you know they are legitimately fleeing Ukraine without checking?

The Ukraine thread

Ukraine talk --> Nuclear War --> Tory Bashing --> Immigration --> Ukraine talk --> Nuclear War --> Tory Bashing --> Immigration --> ...and repeat... :p

I'll be back when the Ukraine talk starts up again.

And how do you know they aren't convicted criminals or terrorists? How do you know they are legitimately fleeing Ukraine without checking?

I have never said don't do checks.

But get them here, into safe hotel, food clothes warmth shelter , THEN sort checks and paperwork.

NOT while they are still sleeping rough, with little food or warmth or anything.

Basic human compassion is all it should be first.

What’s pathetic? The Tories being corrupt disgraceful human beings incapable of following the laws they themselves make or the people calling them out?

It's absolutely true that the Tories have acted disgracefully, but lets see how the UK would have reacted to the Russian invasion if Labour were in power instead -

"We see that the United States has decided that it needs to send US and other Nato troops to Russia's borders. This alone should tell us that the claims that Russia is the aggressor should be treated sceptically." - Jeremy Corbyn (Prime Minister)

"NATOs acts of aggression both historical and present are a threat to all of our safety. Young Labours delegates from across our membership and affiliates voted that we should withdraw from NATO" - Young Labour

"NATO should call a halt to its eastward expansion and commit to a new security deal for Europe which meets the needs of all states and peoples. We refute the idea that Nato is a defensive alliance" - Labour MP's Diane Abbott (Home Secretary), John McDonnell (Chancellor of the Exchequer), Richard Burgon, Ian Lavery, Beth Winter, Zarah Sultana, Bell Ribeiro-Addy, Apsana Begum, Mick Whitley, Tahir Ali, and Ian Mearns.

So yes, the Tories are a bunch liars and rule breakers and I don't like them at all, but lets not believe in any way think that the alternative was some kind of amazing party full of the "best of the best" who would be amazing at running the country.

Anyway, less OT and more Ukraine talk I think.

NOT while they are still sleeping rough, with littke foid or warmth or anything.

All those things can be done before they get here without the risk of a potentially dangerous person absconding and presenting a risk to our citizens.

Ceasefire has just started in Mariupol (12 local time) Let's hope the Russians let it happen this time.

'Buses are currently enroute to the city to take people along a safe "green" corridor through Portovskoye, Rozovka and Zaporozhye.
People will also be able to use private transport to travel in a column along the route, which will also be accompanied by the Red Cross.
The council said: "We ask all drivers leaving the city to facilitate the evacuation of civilians as much as possible - take people with you, fill the transport as much as possible."

I really don't understand the logic of this "open the boarders" patter.

I assume you agree that they would need to have their freedoms restricted until such checks have been carried out. How do you propose this is done?

Those dangerous grans, grandads, mums and children. 90% of men of fighting age are back in Ukraine defending their Country. We are absolutely pathetic as a nation not doing more to help those feeling war.

All those things can be done before they get here without the risk of a potentially dangerous person absconding and presenting a risk to our citizens.
So you agree with others that France doing enough whilst these checks are ongoing? Or do you think that someone that wouldn't get here through normal legal channels will just sit around twiddling their thumbs to be found out?
