If all their income is going on rent / mortgage and food then they'll need some further assistance, either UC top up or some change to basic minimum wage.

They have cut UC so thats out the window. the point is the £200 loan will be pointless come october when the price cap goes up ten fold. so Minimum £2000 gas bill. No one can afford that even with trying to save. Bear in mind the rent has gone up more and peoples wages has not.

We rent in our area 3 bed was ranging around £900 before Covid now its £1200 !!!

Ngl, if the energy prices hit as hard as I am expecting, I'm going to have to beg my work to go full-time WFH as I will need to remove my commuting costs to balance out the energy increase.

Yeah, what a time to be alive. This is going to cripple the lower and middle classes for years to come. Those on the breadline are going to need significant help.

I can’t complain too much though. I’d rather forgo a few luxuries than have to flee my home country while being shelled to start all over again.

So as usual, you don't actually know but you assume a position in your head and argue that like it's reality.

The flip side of that is true when people claim that some are unable to afford to get to work. Do these people know that these people who can't get to work are not peeing their income up the wall on luxuries that they could first curtail to manage their finances better?

Why can't we assassinate the President of Russia you just asked? They'd declare war on us, because we just effectively declared war on them by killing their President in a surprise attack. Adults asking questions like this but presumably having the right to vote

These people had the same choices the rest of us had to fix their energy contracts.

They don't have luxuries they are trying to Survive! the issue is they are taxing more but the national living wage is stagnated.

Yep £1.57 here, i wonder how people will survive on low income with everything going up, it's absolutely nuts. either way the war will costs us money even with the sanctions

Incomes need to start rising significantly before the end of the summer. Over half the country were already living pay cheque to pay cheque so how they are balancing their finances now, I have no idea.

You don't know what outgoings these people have to know that they couldn't cancel certain things first. Otherwise I guess they'll need to take on a second job.

They just need to borrow more money,

That's the risk you take if you simply choose to fix with the cheapest. Market forces.

Wrong when we moved we were put with green energy out of our control, we we're then put with Shell and we could not get access to our account for 6 months!!

Not sure if troll or living in a cave

Interesting piece on the progress of the war, it's written by an Emeritus Professor of War studies so I'm assuming it's a reasonably reliable analysis. It's long but the key points are: the Russians are in big trouble, and Putin may be starting to look for a way out.

We are left contemplating the psychology of the man who launched this catastrophic adventure and must now decide whether to call it off with whatever face-saving claims he can muster. We wonder whether when he claims his war plan is on schedule and is meeting its goals is a continuation of his past delusions, because the sycophants around him don’t know how to tell him the truth, or because he does not know how to admit to the Russian people how badly he has let them down, especially after he has gone to extreme lengths to hide the truth from them. He is now engaging in more conversations with international leaders, the latest being with Israeli prime Minister Naftali Bennett, so perhaps he is starting to look for a diplomatic way out.

It is possible to slide away from defeat by claiming victory against more realistic goals. After all Saddam Hussein led Iraq into two disastrous wars – when he invaded Iran in 1980 and seized Kuwait a decade later. At the end of both, with nothing to show for all the consequential death and destruction, he nonetheless claimed victory because somehow, he had personally managed to survive in power. As Putin is forced to move away from his maximum aims will that minimum one also come to be his priority?

But your palming everyone as having luxuries which is not true.

Fine, means test it with UC. Those that can prove from their bank statements that they have nothing left after their rent / mortgage, an assumed cost of heating their home and other energy requirements is deducted. If that doesn't leave what the DWP deem enough for food then they should receive a UC top up to bring that figure to the figure deemed enough to buy food.
