Part of me still feels that this would be an L for Putin.

He plainly wanted the whole of Ukraine for himself and to install a puppet government. With the sheer amount of troops and equipment he’s lost combined with the crippling sanctions that are crashing his economy, it doesn’t seem like much of a win whichever way you look at it. And the world will know big bad Putin has been forced into a climb down.

Yep it's almost certainly them looking for a consolation prize.

I think cooler heads may have realised just how crippling this could end up for them.

Agreed.

I still think Putin is planning all of this with China. With their goal of unseating the dollar as the reserve currency. I mean, they even conglomerated, and agreed to invade after the Winter Olympics in Beijing. They knew what Putin was scheming because they were in on it.

The reality is that if they can get Russia to cease and come to an agreement (Perhaps as suggested recognising Crimea and the Two areas that were pretty much gone anyway in the Donbass) then part of that will be a loosening of sanctions on the regime, we've seen probably the toughest immediately actioned sanctions ever seen on a country and it looks like things are quickly breaking down economically.

The sanctions will be one of the levers used to "negotiate" and anyway we all rememeber Versailles don't we? Do you really want someone more ultra-nationalist than Putin taking over when he's gone?

If Ukraine get get it down to simply losing crimea and recognising the separatist regions as independent + EU but not NATO membership, I think that might be worth considering.

It's still **** , but could save a lot of bloodshed, and years of war and turmoil.

I think its more China is happy to see what happens. They get to see how the West will react, which is helpful if they make a move on Taiwan. It also lets them see how good the Russian military is and also has the added benefit of making Russia dependent on them.

Agree and China could play havoc with the dollar if they dump their $1 trillion US treasury bonds.

If (and its a big if) this was settled in that way (Crimea and the Donbass Russian/Independent) then whats left of Ukraine is going to need massive financial support from the West to rebuild; EU Membership would be a decent route to manage that and encourage growth, etc but also giving them some umbrella of protection perhaps without triggering Russia's fear of "NATO" on their doorstep....

My late father who passed away in 2015 married a Ukrainian who was a university professor in Kyiv. They lived together in Scotland at his death but soon afterwards she moved back to Kyiv and the relationship between her and I broke down and we had no further contact.
It doesn't sound like the current rules that the government have in terms of visas would support her in coming back to the UK, and I have no idea if she would - they lived in Prague before returning here so he could have treatment for his illness but there wasn't the plan to reside here indefinitely.
I've found her on Facebook and her current job is listed as working for the British Council. I've reached out to her to see if there's anything that I can do to help. I'm not really expecting a response, but I think it's important to do what I reasonably can. If I do, and if appropriate, I'll update the thread.
I first met her in a bar in Kyiv where she was celebrating the end of the academic year with her students, and they were a lovely welcoming bunch and I was shown a great city by great people. Very sad.
I should have probably reached out earlier than today, and I can only hope that her and her two adult kids are well.

Russia I doubt will back down on the request not to join Nato/EU, its the primary reason all of this has happened.

In turn Nato/EU need to accept this and will beef up the defences in the east of existing territories.
Ukraine will be the buffer zone, the moment for any other solution disappeared when Putin crossed the border.

There has to be an acceptance on all side that nothing will return to how it was

Great to see the news of 30 aircraft destroyed! Well done Ukrainian marines.

Seems their (presumably land-based) Naval forces have had a blinder too and sunk a Russian ship too!!!!! (I guess their anti-shipping missiles and maybe some assistance with surveillance/reconnaissance or indeed their own drones has helped there)

He's one of the outspoken ones already, would be good to see some new Oligarchs chiming in.
