Not talking about the poor. Talking about the people I know who amongst them work for an international company and their coping mechanism with their economy going down the pan.
That's ok. I feel the same about them due to their murder of children and families.

I think being more honest people were more praising the fact a sleeping giant in Germany has been awakened.
They have thrown off the national "we cannot get involved in war" and also picked up the pace in their military spend. They will exceed the UK quite quickly in annual spend if they push ahead with that.

Its not that surprising that a lot of their equipment was old and dubious when you consider where a significant portion of the nation was a few decades ago (other side of the iron curtain!)
Plus of course they haven't been spending sooo much on defence, although in recent years they were much much closer to the UK and France than people realise, you cant however turn that around over night.

I'm sure there are few older Brits not so happy to see high German military expenditure ;)

Exactly this, I don't think people realise how big a thing it was for Scholz to U-turn on 60ish years of German foreign and defence policy in the space of a few days.

I'd expect their military capabilities to be significantly strengthened if they increase their defence budget as announced wtiith significant improved conventional capabilities, they don't have Trident to pay for.

I do know people already who are a little wary though with a strong German military......

I'm not directly responsible for the reasons why they hate the west; so theres we go.
Who are they ? They don’t hate the west either.

my response is only to the assumption people will turn against Putin due to sanctions.

two wrongs never make a right

Thinking about the situation now in the world, we have a situation were any country with nukes can invade another country, take it over, and won't be directly attacked by any other country with nuclear weapons.

What's my point? I don't think we can take for granted that the sanctions are going to turn the Russian people against their leader - it's equally possible it will do the opposite.
Agreed - it effectively means they will become more isolated and hence easier to indoctrinate into the Kremlin's way of thinking. Create a real "us vs them" mentality (perhaps understandably, for a random civvie on the ground in Russia) whereby the West is increasing their suffering and all the internal propaganda. Essentially it winds the clock back 40 years to a time when Western influences in Russia would have been much less than they are today.

I'm concerned that we are standing by while the innocent are massacred. I understand why we don't want to get involved and trigger a broader war but the problem with appeasement is the infidels will keep pushing the boundaries. Ukraine today, but where tomorrow if they can just get away with it? It is also morally reprehensible, if Wales was getting massacred by the English they'd be crying out for help from Europe. If your family was being butchered would you accept as an excuse that other nations are "doing all all they can" with sanctions that cannot block bullets and missiles, at least not right now?

Maybe we'll just have to bite the bullet and wade in before it gets even worse. Which could in turn make it much much worse. But what value is there is trying to preserve world peace if the world consists of children being shelled and dying of dehydration?

And that's why the price for doing so needs to be massive, which Russia over the next few decades is going to experience.

Feel sorry for the normal Russian person on the street.

Everybody was praising Germany for sending weapons did you see the stuff they sent some 1960's old soviet crap and the anti tank missiles are basic as well basically RPG's while we are sending state of the art stuff they have done bugger all just like the French.

The UK was able to send high-end equipment because we started supplying it early, and provided training for over 20,000 soldiers alongside it. There's no point sending stuff that they're not trained to use, they simply won't be able to take advantage of it. That old soviet crap is the stuff that Ukraine already has, already has soldiers trained to use, and already has the expertise and logistics to support.

Think the main point was some anti-tank stuff they sent was reportedly from 1990s and not functional.

The sanctions and associated reactions are turning the populous anti Europe if anything

Problem is, they won't protest what thier leader is doing and for the majority going on the tiny protests they are in favour or indifferent, if that's the case then let them suffer, we are not losing any friends are we?
