Dashcam to record for 24 hrs.

I thought I would try a powerbank out for the last couple of days. Just to try it out before getting a proper one with passthrough so I could have parked recording.

The major flaw is that the powerbank takes too long to charge, i.e. if you aren't driving all day it won't completely charge :o so hardly records anything outside of driving.

While connected to the powerbank, there is no way for the dashcam to know to switch to more efficient parking modes.

That is true in that context - it takes around 40 minutes to charge up the ones I have suited to that kind of use.

Apologies for the delay. Got pre-occupied with a few things.
This was to record some **** in my neighbourhood who loves to rev his engine and then do drift racing at 3am on weekends on a main road.

My thinking was that I would leave my car with the dashcam running and then find out who is the **** and his vehicle reg and then report him.

Please fully star your swear words. Thanks - EVH

...you're not in Solihull are you?

Frustratingly each new generation seems to reduce the write cycles lifetime - slightly older generation normal ones often have higher write endurance than the newer ultra-high endurance ones :( and so on.

I've been using some older Kingston 32 and 64GB ones which survive about 10x as long as a current model 64 or 128GB high endurance SD card in the same situation.

128GB gets about 20 hours of footage on the ones I use though I think you can adjust the settings to double that at a reduction in quality - but you really don't want to do that as it renders the footage useless for actually showing a lot of stuff like numberplates and finer details.

Its the move from SLC fladh to MLC then TLC and now QLC. Just inferior products to drive up capacity and cut cost.

call the police 101 ?

I do know that about 12 hours of 4K recording on a mobile phone can pretty consume a 128GB memory card quite easily. If you lowered the bitrate you might get an hour or two extra, but at the cost of image quality.

I wouldn't use a 4K resolution to record footage at night, as there would probably be too much noise to make it worthwhile. Unless you live in a well lit area area, of course. Plus 4K will drain the battery quicker than 1080p, due to the processing power needed.

Buy a 256GB memory card and record at 1080p. If it's only for a few nights, just buy a Sandisk Ultra for around £30. But it's being used for a few weeks, perhaps consider a Sandisk Max Endurance card, which are around £75.

CCTV would be easier to set up for this tbh.

Nope, never been to Brummie land now that I think of it.

I did multiple times. They were useless.

It's difficult to set up CCTV on a public road where I don't live :)

I drive a lot and use a nextbase 622gw 4k@30 (I have used 1440@60 also).
I use an integral u3 128gb card, after formatting and system files this leaves 116gb for recordings (minus saved files etc).
I record constant 3minute files which are 1.1gb each for 4k and 900mb for 1440@60, I haven't tried 1080 I'm afraid but just providing a few numbers :)
