God `elp them, the three people I know who are thrutching to take on board this scheme are openly in it purely for the money and I wouldn't board a dog with them ;) Anyway, you can only apply if you know a Ukrainian family or person at the moment, or vice versa I think, although how that will be vetted is anyone's guess.

Was looking for some context with regards to Russian losses.

During the worst year in Vietnam (1968), the US lost a reported 16,899 military personnel (total). If in a period of 3 weeks Russia has lost even half of the 12k reported deaths then the numbers are mind bogglingly bad.
 
So what happens if Nord Stream goes the same way as Yamal later today?

I mean energy prices will go mental in the short term, but agricultural impact in how many months as well?

Hypernormalisation by Adam Curtis is a very relevant watch on iPlayer if anyone hasn't seen it.

6 years old now but covers the rise of Putin, our addiction to Chinese tat etc. I don't agree with everything he says but it's a worthwhile background take on the current mess.

You really need to compare to WW2 to get any meaningful data. Vietnam is nothing like a European theatre of war on flat land.

Pretty much. I used to do IT support for a holiday company about 20 years ago, so I was broadly familiar with the systems. Pretty much all parts and orders were tracked even back then, and that was on the simpler types like 767s. Most significant parts - the serial numbers were tracked against which aircraft they were on and how many hours/cycles they'd done. You couldn't order anything from say Boeing without telling them which aircraft it was going on. Full inventory of parts in stock, including a couple of spare engines of each type (worth a couple million back then) sat ready in case it needed flying out somewhere at the drop of a hat.

Assuming they've not gone like modern cars where things need coding, best they can do is use existing parts from stock (assuming they're in Russia), and cannibalising other aircraft. More than a few months and they're stuffed.

Sure. Look at it this way. When I was growing up we had a tonne of lodgers brought in to help with the costs of running the house, and exchange students for various other reasons. Sometimes they were nice. Sometimes they were bearable. Sometimes they were awful. You just don't know what you're going to get. Have you ever gone on the scout for new flatmates post, say, age 25? It's hard to find someone you get on with well enough, let alone someone you would choose to live with.

So given the choice... I would opt out. It doesn't mean you're xenophobic or racist, I don't care if they're from Ukraine or Upminster, I don't want another person in my residence who I don't know.

People offering a place in their home do need to go into it fully aware of what they are committing to.

These are going to be vulnerable people who may have witnessed some horrific things. All will be distressed and need support as they've left everything and possibly everyone behind. It's not going to be here's a room, crack on.

I applaud anyone who knows all that and is prepared to do it.
