Looking at the list above the US isn’t screwing around. They’ve obviously determined drones are more effective or I’m sure the MIGs would still have been delivered.
The MiGs that Ukraine/Poland were trying to transfer before the USA put the kibosh on it would have been more useful to them than drones, but because of that there would have been a higher risk of it being seen as a NATO escalation by Putin.

A lot of the stalling/lack of support the US has contributed so far has been geared specifically to make any argument by Putin of NATO actively supporting Ukraine unsubstantiable.

What does "strictly speaking" mean in this context?

It means 'to be precise.'

China is not Marxist or Leninist in any meaningful sense: it's a straight forward single party autocracy which uses controlled free market elements to its economic benefit.

Yes, it's a single party autocracy which uses controlled free market elements to its economic benefit. It is run by the Chinese Communist Party, which is solidly Maxist-Leninist, and draws on this ideology for the shaping of policy.

I mean, other than all the innovation in China over the past few thousand years, you are right.

Those innovations were produced in more enlightened eras, before China took a deep dive into Communism, dictatorship, and turgid government bureaucracy (of course the long term effects of Confucianism have also played a part).

If you look through Chinese history, you will find that innovation begins to taper off severely at the turn of the 19th century. China's capacity for innovation remains very limited compared to the West.

'Why China Can’t Innovate.'

'China’s innovation dilemma.'

'Lack of innovation is 'Achilles heel' for China's economy, Xi says.'

'A Confucian dilemma: China has barriers to innovation as government doesn’t want to lose control.'

Yeah, apart from the crank, the compass, paper, gunpowder, printing, steel, cast and wrought iron, the blast furnace, bellows, oil drilling and refining, petroleum and gas what have the Chinese done for us?

Oh, I forgot porcelain and toilet paper!

The fact that you have to look this far back in history for examples only proves my point, and they are a bit of a mixed bag.

The crank was not invented by the Chinese; it was invented in Spain during the 5th century BCE. China's version came a few centuries later.

The Chinese did invent the compass (more than 2,000 years ago), paper (2nd century BCE), gunpowder (9th century CE), woodblock printing (silk before the 3rd century CE; paper by the 9th century CE).

Steel was not invented by the Chinese, it was invented in Turkey nearly 4,000 years ago.

The Chinese did invent wrought iron (2nd century BCE) and cast iron (5th century BCE).

The Chinese did invent a primitive charcoal-based blast furnace somewhere around 1 CE, although it took other civilisations to improve on the concept.

The bellows was not invented by the Chinese; it was a product of the Mesopotamian people (largely Babylonians and Hittites) some time before 1,800 BCE. China improved on this concept with the box bellows in 400 BCE.

The Chinese did invent oil drilling (~347 CE) and refining (~515 CE).

Petroleum was not invented by the Chinese; it was first used in Babylon ~4,000 years ago, and the Chinese finally got around to playing with the stuff ~2,000 years later.

The Chinese did invent the use of natural gas in homes for lighting and heating (~1,700 years ago) although they did not develop a truly practical implementation of the concept until ~500 BCE.

The Chinese did invent porcelain (~25-2550 CE) and toilet paper (5th century BCE).

The Chinese did invent porcelain (~25-2550 CE).

Those pesky, time-travelling Chinese.

See, there they go again. Invented it in 300CE and took it back in time 800 years.

I'm surprised by how little anti-drone systems seem to be in operation, one of my college friends designed and prototype a capable one, using off the shelf parts, for his uni course like 10-15 years back maybe even longer - my memory is a little hazy now.

Well there’s drones then there’s drones…

It means 'to be precise.'

Then you are wrong.

Yes, it's a single party autocracy which uses controlled free market elements to its economic benefit. It is run by the Chinese Communist Party, which is solidly Maxist-Leninist, and draws on this ideology for the shaping of policy.

The CCP isn't Marxist or Leninist. It may pay lip service to those ideas but they do not behave according to those philosophies. You could describe it as Communism since real Communism doesn't have much to do with those philosophies either.

Ukraine launched small counter offensives today and I saw they successfully wrecked the airbase Russia were using in Kherson after a 2nd attack. Lots of helis and support vehicles ruined. Probably unusable as a base too unless they do something about the arty targeting them. Really don't think they have a hope of reaching Odessa by land which surely must rule out a sea assault. Unless they are that dumb.

Seems to be a question of when and not if the Russians are not just stopped but forced to pull back, retreat or straight out surrender in some areas. Just hope they don't destroy too much more before Putin realises it. It's no longer a question of throwing numbers at it like in ww2.

I'd always assumed that while effective against 3rd world adversaries, that drones would be pointless in a peer on peer fight. That surely as much money goes into countering them as making. Since they're remote controlled it's got to be just a case of jamming them to turn them into very expensive darts. Turned out I was very wrong. Or Russia just didn't think about them or figured the small numbers the Turks had sold Ukraine wouldn't overly matter.

if you mean bayraktar it takes a big truck with a huge aerial to control them, not some tiny handset that can easily be disrupted.

the little drones the UK use for surveillance cost around $195,000 according to google, I doubt you are blocking them with off the shelf stuff.

it's probably even harder if they are using satellite communication, which the bayraktar is capable of, but probably not in Ukraine hands.

There is a whole range of drones, circumstances and ways to disable or destroy them - the bigger stuff can be targets for air-defences.

I wasn't talking in that case about disrupting them - it was a whole system for detecting and destroying them - his specialisation was in the signal processing side of it writing clever algorithms for determining the position, etc. using a mixture of sensor systems even without line of sight.

The prototype was like those DIY sentry turret projects people make with airsoft weapons, etc. but a lot more advanced.
