I didn't say it was Russian, I said it was a Russian framing. It's traditionally been the way we refer to it in Britain, and many other countries (in German it was "die Ukraine") but that "the" comes from a Russian way of speaking about it. Just as in English we refer to "the Cotswolds" or "the fens" to refer to parts of our country, "the Ukraine" comes from Russian's speaking of Ukraine as a region rather than an independent nation, this Ukraine has for some time asked others to drop the "the" (or "die" or whatever) from their name.
