FlightRadar24 had a funny few minutes just now - kicked me off for a bit and some data didn't update immediately on changing which aircraft(s) were your focus so you might have been seeing incorrect data.

Although that event pre-dated Able Archer 83 by a month or so it was during the Reforger 83 exercise and at a point of extreme paranoia between both sides of the Iron Curtain, I was growing up in West Germany at the time and even as a 14 year old I could sense the tension in the squaddies we grew up surrounded by. I didn't say it was Russian, I said it was a Russian framing. It's traditionally been the way we refer to it in Britain, and many other countries (in German it was "die Ukraine") but that "the" comes from a Russian way of speaking about it. Just as in English we refer to "the Cotswolds" or "the fens" to refer to parts of our country, "the Ukraine" comes from Russian's speaking of Ukraine as a region rather than an independent nation, this Ukraine has for some time asked others to drop the "the" (or "die" or whatever) from their name.

Same as I always think of say the Isle of Wight for some reason the Ukraine comes easily. However given his capitalisation, the rest of the post and related posts earlier, I think he was being contemptuous with the The.
