Thinking of decorating our downstair loo, light grey on the bottom, white on top and then putting some decorative wooden trim where the colours meet

Seems straight forward enough.

Would it be best to paint the walls first and use tape to create the divide. Then cut and paint the trim before putting it up?

Does this stuff usually just get stuck on with no more nails, or is it best to pop some nails in too maybe patch them up at the end?

I'm of the mind that painting it once on the wall would be more hassle, cutting in above and below etc

Any tips appreciated! First time venture

This sort of thing, probably a thinner trim and a bit higher to clear a tiled area above our sink

That picture you posted is pretty much the same colour scheme we're doing next in hall, stairs and landing. Ours already has the wooden trim so couldn't tell you what it's fixed with but I would be happy to fix with unibond adhesive I've used it for window sills and they are not coming off which is great but also a pain because I need to remove them soon!

Looks really nice in that image^

I think we would go a bit higher, id love to tackle the hallway, stairs and landing too.

Seems a massive task :(

If just the taping goes well and leaves a nice divide then I may skip the trim idea but I think it looks good with it.

Only talking a small room though

You have to remember that no more nails was invented hundreds of years after wooden dado rails - they'd just be nailed on traditionally. And dadoes were invented for a reason: to stop chairs bashing into the walls and damaging them, so the choice of height is somewhat functional.

That said, if you're just going for aesthetics... Do it however you like. I can tell you though that if I KNEW I was using a rail, then I wouldn't be trying too hard to get a neat line between the 2 colours. I'd just run a line of tape across, paint either side simultaneously and then whack the rails up.
