It’s a rather horrifying fact of modern warfare that there can be very little to nothing left of a human body that is subjected to a direct hit by a large calibre HE shell or trapped inside an AFV when the ammunition and/or fuel cooks off.

You are Mr Solemn the (disgruntled) undertaker, and I claim my £10

I can understand why we're not wanting a NATO no fly zone. But it feels like we've setup this moral barrier and think we're taking the high ground while a massacre is going on inside Ukraine.

If Hitler had WMD are we saying we wouldn't have gotten involved in WW2?

At some point we need to set a deadline for this and take over the narrative, instead of just letting Putin have this endless war going on

It might be time to at least lay down ground rules for outside of Ukraine i.e. don't attack Moldova, Finland or Sweden.

Who, exactly, will be coming to Finland and Sweden's aid? NATO? Nope, not a part of the alliance. The US? Probably not Biden has signalled he has absolutely no interest in getting his country into foreign wars again he pulled out of Afghanistan for a reason. The EU? Doesn't have its fighting force and certainly not a military treaty. Us? Lol, much as Bojo likes to think he's the reincarnation of Churchill he certainly isn't.

Finland has employed a policy of strict neutrality since their winter war with Stalin and chosen not to directly pose a threat to Russia, that may be changing after Putin's threats lately but requires ratification by parliament. Sweden has been neutral for centuries but opinion is changing but again non aligned currently.

Neutrality means you pose no threat to anyone in the event of war elsewhere but also means you stand alone if war comes to you no-ones coming to your aid its a balancing act certainly NATO has no obligation to defend them and would require a treaty amendment to do so. Finland in particular is really feeling the pressure if they join that antogonises Russia on the other hand look what happened to Ukraine. So they're between a rock and a hard place. But they don't contribute funds or troops to NATO so no obligation and probably not much will to defend them from the US who see the situation as a european problem.

In short no plans currently but they do have strong ties to NATO and both are in the EU so its a tougher call than Moldova which is not aligned to anything and does have a breakaway region and russian troops on its soil to "defend" its minority. That'll be Putin's next target but no-one in the west is going to war over that because no-one wants a direct confrontation with russia.

Its not an "endless" war the lines are clear and its NATO's borders outside that, well good luck.

Ukraine seems to have had a bit of success landing high calibre munitions on individual vehicles - I've seen pictures of tanks where 75% of the bodywork has been reduced to ~4x4 inch sized pieces spread over a large area :s not just the result of internal ammo cooking off unless the material quality is even lower than assumed.

Not that highly - the evidence supports around 2.5K bodies have come back from each of the 3 fronts and likely a little higher than that 2.5K in reality with those who'll never come back in a body bag.

Ukraine’s military says that more than 14,000 Kremlin troops have been killed since the Russian invasion on February 24, while one US intelligence estimate has put the number at around 7,000. Moscow’s Defence Ministry says that less than 500 soldiers have been killed.

US and allied intelligence assessments vary widely as to exactly how many Russian forces have been killed to date, sources familiar with the intelligence tell CNN. But even the lowest estimates are in the thousands.
One such assessment found that approximately 7,000 Russian troops have been killed so far, said one of the sources. But that figure, first reported by The New York Times, is on the higher end of US estimates, which vary because the US and its allies have no precise way of counting casualties. Some estimates place the number of Russian troops killed in Ukraine at about 3,000, whereas others suggest more than 10,000 have been killed.

I think the U.S stat would be closer to the truth and I wouldn't be surprised if even they had raised it to make Russia look bad.
I think everything coming out from Ukraine is just at that level where I find anything they say now hard to believe.

If that's just for the Kyiv/part of the Chernihiv/Khariv offensive then the other offensives ought to be similarly hefty (except perhaps the Crimean MBTs who have only recently been facing resistance) and that's just the bodies they could bring back, there'll be plenty of bodies rotting away on both sides having not been able to reclaim them per the risk.

I think the US numbers are conservative, I doubt it's as high as Ukraine estimates but I wouldn't be surprised either as it's impossible to know really know if a soldier is MIA, KIA or disabled.

Kind of hard not to find some truth to the numbers when Russia was busy throwing airborne forces into contested airspace early on and apparently continue to send literal police forces (well I guess more like the US's ATF or FBI) towards the frontline with barely any armour.

'The Germans haven't sent any weapons to Ukraine in almost 3 weeks and have delivered only one fifth of what they promised.'

Someone should go check if Nord 2 is running.

Could all the gaming giants close down Russian servers/multiplayer access if they wanted to?

Yup, the US did it in Iran with League of Legends. But that's F2P. I'm guessing Microsoft and Sony can't just disconnect millions of Russians from their consoles online, as many would have paid for the service in advance on a yearly subscription.

That being said, haven't heard anything about the huge F2P giants pulling out. Epic Games, for instance, said they would suspend in-game transaction in Fortnight, but didn't say the game would be unplayable. It's mostly just suspension of hardware sales and some games from a select few companies. And Esports. Banned from competitions and stuff.

It's a good point, though. I'm now wondering why the US isn't terminating access for the above games and others, as they have previously shown they can.

I thought about this, but I actually think it would be counterproductive. In game comms, discord, TeamSpeak etc are not censored by the state atm so could be used to get around the state propaganda

Hmm hypersonic through low altitude air. Not sure.
Don’t think this is hypersonic but the US did confirm they were able to track in real time hypersonic missiles being used last week. That just be a little unnerving for Russia that those can be tracked so well. That won’t be a good sign if Russia had to rely on those for future nukes or warfare with the west.
